Two cabinet bids can differ by thousands and both be fair, because they priced different things. Tick the questions you want answered, then copy them into an email to every shop.

Install and extras0/4

Red flags

  • No CCB number, or one that does not match the company name on the Oregon CCB search.
  • A single lump-sum price with no spec: no box material, no hardware brand, no finish.
  • Asks for the whole price up front.
  • Will not let you see a finished job or a sample door in your color.
  • Does not measure the room themselves before building.
  • Leaves countertops, crown, panels and install as "TBD" with no allowance.

07 · Schedule

How long a custom kitchen takes

Typical ranges for a full custom kitchen. Shops' queues swing with the building season, so ask each one for its current lead time.

1Call shops, site visits, first ideas 1 to 3 wk
2Design, drawings and revisions 2 to 4 wk
3Sign, pay deposit, final selections 1 wk
4Wait in the build queue and fabrication 6 to 12 wk
5Delivery and install 1 to 2 wk
6Countertops templated, cut and set 1 to 3 wk
7Plumbing, appliances, punch list 1 wk
Total13 to 26 wk

Countertops cannot be measured until the cabinets are set. Plan on a week or more with plywood tops or no sink in between, and line up a temporary kitchen.

08 · Local knowledge

Building cabinets for Central Oregon

What is different about cabinets here, from dry winter air to ski boots in the mudroom.

Dry air moves wood

Bend's high desert air is dry, and winter heat (forced air, woodstoves, pellet stoves) dries it more. Solid wood shrinks and swells across the grain with the seasons. Ask your shop to build for it: MDF center panels or MDF doors for paint, and letting wood acclimate before it is built.

Mudrooms work hard here

Ski boots, wet gloves, dog leashes, bike helmets. Ask for open lockers or vented doors so gear can dry, a bench with boot storage, and a durable finish on everything at kick height.

Garages get cold

An unheated Central Oregon garage swings from below freezing to hot summer afternoons. Metal (Baldhead) or melamine systems handle that better than finished hardwood. Keep cabinets off the slab where snowmelt pools.

Lodge vs high desert modern

Two looks dominate local galleries: knotty alder and hickory in a lodge style, and rift white oak or walnut with slab doors in a modern style. Many kitchens split the difference with a painted perimeter and a wood island.

Vacation homes need lockable storage

If you rent your place in Bend, Sunriver or Black Butte, add a lockable owner's closet or cabinet for your own supplies and gear. It is much cheaper to build in now than to add later.

See the work in person

The Central Oregon Builders Association Tour of Homes each summer is a free way to open real cabinet drawers. Note which shop built what you like, then call them.

09 · Rules

Licenses, permits and contracts

The Oregon basics before you hand anyone a deposit.

Check a CCB license in four clicks

Oregon law requires anyone paid to do construction work on real property, including carpentry, to be licensed with the Construction Contractors Board.

  1. Open the CCB contractor search.
  2. Type the company name or the CCB number from its website.
  3. Open the result and confirm the license is Active and the name matches the company on your bid.
  4. Look at the bond, insurance and complaint history on the same page.

Do you need a permit?

  • Usually no permit: replacing cabinets and countertops in the same places. Oregon's residential code treats cabinets and countertops as finish work.
  • Permit needed: moving or adding plumbing or gas, new electrical circuits, or taking out a wall.
  • Who to ask: the City of Bend permit center for addresses inside city limits, Deschutes County for rural addresses.

Get it in writing

  • Oregon requires a written contract for residential construction jobs over $2,000, which covers almost any cabinet job.
  • Licensed contractors also owe you several consumer notices on residential work, including one about construction liens. If none show up, ask.
  • Put the spec, drawings, payment schedule and a target install week in the contract.
  • Built before 1978? Sanding or stripping old painted cabinets needs a lead-safe certified contractor.

10 · Questions

Cabinet FAQ

How much do custom cabinets cost in Bend?

It depends on size, wood, finish and how much detail you want, so local shops rarely post prices. One Bend shop, Deschutes River Cabinet & Closet, publishes a $12,000 project minimum. For a fair comparison, get two or three bids on the same written spec rather than comparing totals.

How long do custom cabinets take?

Plan on a few months from first call to working kitchen for a full custom job. Design takes weeks, the build queue and fabrication usually takes the longest, and countertops cannot be measured until cabinets are installed. Ask each shop for its current lead time and put a target week in your contract.

Do I need a permit to replace kitchen cabinets in Bend?

Swapping cabinets and countertops in the same spots is generally finish work that does not need a building permit under Oregon's residential code. Moving or adding plumbing, gas, electrical circuits, or removing walls does need permits. Ask the City of Bend Permit Center for addresses inside city limits, or Deschutes County for rural addresses.

Does a cabinet maker need a license in Oregon?

Yes, if they install in your home. Oregon law requires anyone paid to do construction work on real property, which includes carpentry, to be licensed with the Construction Contractors Board. Look up the license number for free on the CCB website.

Is face-frame or frameless better?

Neither is better built. Face-frame has a solid wood frame on the front and a traditional look. Frameless (European) has no frame, so doors cover the whole box, drawers are a little wider and the look is cleaner. Pick the look you like and the shop that does it well.

Should I paint or replace my cabinets?

If the boxes are solid, dry and the layout works, painting or new doors costs a fraction of new cabinets. Replace when boxes are water damaged, sagging, or the layout does not work for how you cook.

What wood is popular in Central Oregon?

Knotty alder and hickory for a lodge look, and white oak and walnut for modern homes. Painted cabinets are common on the perimeter with a wood island.

Where can I get used cabinets or donate old ones?

The Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 224 NE Thurston Ave in Bend sells donated cabinets and takes donations. There is a second store in Redmond.
