Local shortcut

Pair places by direction - not by popularity.

The easiest way to ruin a Central Oregon day is to stack famous places that send you in opposite directions. These combinations make geographic sense.

01

Sisters + Suttle Lake

Coffee or lunch in Sisters, then head for the lake. This is one of the cleanest town + outdoors combinations.

02

Redmond + Smith Rock

Use Redmond for food before or after the hike instead of bouncing all the way back to Bend between stops.

03

Sunriver + Newberry

A strong full-day south-of-Bend pairing: resort amenities on one side, lava and lake country on the other.

04

Camp Sherman + Metolius

Do less. Walk the river, eat nearby, fish if that is the plan, and let the drive be part of the day.

Before you drive

A few things locals account for.

High country is seasonal.

Cascade Lakes and higher-elevation routes can be a completely different trip depending on snow, road access and time of year.

Smoke is hyper-local.

A clear morning in Bend does not guarantee the same conditions at a lake, Smith Rock or farther south. Check before committing to the drive.

Heat changes the plan.

Exposed high-desert hikes are better early on hot days. Save shaded river, lake or town time for later.

One great stop beats four rushed ones.

Central Oregon is better when you leave room for a long lunch, a swim, a river walk or an unexpected stop instead of racing the itinerary.
