BINGO

First timer?

How to play bingo in Bend like a regular

Bring cash, small bills

Most local games are cash only, especially the charity and hall games. Ones and fives make buying cards between rounds easy.

Get there early

Portello and Not'cho Grandma's fill up. Reserve a table when you can, or arrive 30 minutes before the first game.

Bring a dauber

Hall games use ink daubers. Some places sell them; bar games usually hand out pens or markers.

Know the pattern

Each game calls a pattern: a line, four corners, an X or a blackout (every square). Listen before the first number.

Yell loud

You only win when the caller hears you. Shout "BINGO!" before the next number is called.

Check the age rules

Brewery and community games usually welcome kids. Hall games like the Elks are 18+, and some bar nights are 21+.

Bingo lingo

Dauber
A bottle of ink with a sponge tip for marking cards fast.
Blackout (coverall)
Cover every number on the card. Usually the last, biggest game of the night.
Bundle or packet
A set of cards for every game of the night, sold for one price.
Buy-in
The minimum you pay to sit and play, common at hall games.
Early bird
A warm-up game before the main session starts.
Free space
The middle square on a 75-ball card. It counts as already marked.
Music bingo
Your card has song titles. Mark them when the DJ plays them.
Split the pot
The prize is a share of card sales, often split with a charity.

Good to know

Why so much Bend bingo is for charity

  • In Oregon, only tax-exempt nonprofits that have been active for at least a year can run bingo for money. The Oregon Department of Justice licenses and oversees charitable bingo.
  • A licensed bingo game can't award more than $5,000 in a single game, except for two $10,000 games a year.
  • It's one reason most bar and brewery bingo nights here are free to play with swag prizes, or raise money for a local charity.
  • Tribal casinos are regulated separately from charitable bingo.
