Taco styles you’ll see in Bend

Knowing the words on the menu board makes ordering at a cart a lot easier.

Street tacos

Two small corn tortillas, meat, onion, cilantro and lime, with salsa on the side. Order three or four and mix meats: asada (grilled steak), al pastor or adobada (marinated pork), carnitas (braised pork), lengua (tongue), cabeza (head meat), tripa (tripe).

Birria and quesotacos

Birria is slow-stewed beef in a chile broth. A quesotaco or quesabirria is fried with melted cheese until crisp, then dunked in the consomé. El Taquero, SOPA, Papi Chulo’s, La Birria Republic and Carmelita’s all specialize.

Vampiros and mulitas

A vampiro is a tortilla crisped with a layer of cheese, then topped with meat (El Taquero, Hablo). A mulita is a cheesy sandwich of two tortillas. Both are great if you like crunch.

Baja and seafood

Fried or grilled fish and shrimp with cabbage and crema. Try Hablo’s rockfish, El Sancho’s grilled fish or fried shrimp, Xalisco’s mezcal shrimp or La Catrina Chingona’s yuzu lobster.

Breakfast tacos

Texas-style eggs, potatoes and chorizo in a soft tortilla. Wandering Ranchero does them on duck-fat tortillas; Lucy’s and Rodolberto’s open at 6 a.m.

Global street tacos

Spork’s tacos borrow from all over: fried cheese, chicken tinga, carnitas, tofu, shrimp and potato bacon, $4.25 each.

Tacos by part of town

Westside and NorthWest Crossing

Spork on Newport, Taco Salsa and Parrilla Grill near Galveston, La Rosa and Hablo at The Grove in NorthWest Crossing, Casa Sur and El Taquero’s Base Camp truck on Century Drive.

Downtown and Box Factory

Papi Chulo’s patio at the Box Factory and Wandering Ranchero’s breakfast truck at Bond and Colorado; the El Sancho cart is a short walk away at Crux.

Third Street and the east side

The cluster for cheap, fast tacos: Rodolberto’s, Lucy’s, Delicias La Michoacana and Tacos Pihuamo along Third, plus El Sancho on Dekalb, Hablo and El Taquero at On Tap off Cushing, Taco El Machin and SOPA.

Redmond, Sisters and Smith Rock

Xalisco near the airport exit is the big one; add La Birria Republic and Órale at Redmond’s food pods. Carmelita’s covers Sisters, and La Catrina Chingona feeds Smith Rock climbers in Terrebonne.

Plan a Bend taco crawl

Two or three stops is plenty. Split orders so you can taste more.

Birria tacos with salsas and lime from El Taquero
Photo: El Taquero

Eastside street-taco crawl

Start at Tacos Pihuamo on SE 3rd, roll north to Delicias La Michoacana, and finish with quesotacos at El Taquero’s On Tap truck, where there’s beer.

Westside walkable crawl

Fried cheese tacos at Spork, then Hablo or La Rosa in NorthWest Crossing for a margarita.

Beer-pod tacos

El Sancho at Crux, El Taquero at On Tap or Bend Base Camp, and SOPA’s trucks at The Dogwood and River’s Place. Order tacos, then grab a pint.

Redmond detour

Pair Xalisco with a trip to Smith Rock or a flight out of RDM; the restaurant is minutes from the airport exit.

Local tips

  • Cart hours change with weather and season. Check Instagram or the map listing before you drive across town.
  • Order consomé with birria. It’s usually a separate line on the menu at El Taquero.
  • Late-night options are thin: Rodolberto’s posts 6 a.m.–midnight daily, and El Sancho’s Taco Shop runs until 10 p.m.
  • Most taco shops are counter service. Order, grab salsas, and find a seat; sit-down spots like Casa Sur and La Rosa take reservations.
  • Gluten-free? Spork marks most dishes GF, and corn-tortilla street tacos are often a safe bet; ask about shared fryers.
  • Bring a jacket to cart pods in spring and fall. Bend evenings drop fast even after warm afternoons.
