Pick the shop by the job, not by what’s closest.

One PDF before a meeting, 500 postcards, a banner for the finish line, a canvas of Broken Top and a set of house plans are five different jobs. In Bend they go to five different kinds of places: a copy counter, a print shop, a sign shop, a photo lab and a wide-format machine.

So this guide is sorted by what you’re printing. Tap your job above, or scroll to the kind of shop you need. Then use the file checklist before you send anything, because most reprints come from the file, not the printer.

Need it today

Copies, documents and same-day printing 4

For a PDF, a resume, a return label or twenty flyers, go to a counter, not a print shop. These places take walk-ins, print from your phone or a USB drive, and don’t need a quote. Most local printers are closed on weekends, so this is also your Saturday and Sunday list.

When it has your logo on it

Local print shops for business cards, brochures and mailers 5

Once the piece represents your business, or you need a few hundred of them, a real print shop is worth the phone call. They’ll help you pick paper, catch a low-resolution logo before it prints, and fold, bind or mail the finished job. Expect a quote and a proof, not a price list.

★ Local shop
Redmond

Best for: A second quote on a larger business print job

A commercial printer in Redmond that serves Central Oregon businesses. Worth a call when you’re comparing quotes on a bigger job and don’t need a walk-in counter in Bend.

Sign shops, banners, vehicle wraps and trade show displays 4

A banner for Saturday is a quick print. A sign on your building is a construction project with a permit. These shops handle the big stuff: banners, yard signs, window and vehicle graphics, monument signs and trade show booths.

Photo printing and fine-art giclée prints 2

Office printers are tuned for text and charts, not skin tones or a Three Sisters sunset. If you’re framing it, selling it or giving it as a gift, use a lab that prints with archival inks on real photo paper or canvas.

Screen printing, embroidery and custom apparel 4

Bend runs on logo hats and event shirts, and there are local shops that print and stitch them here in town. Ask about minimums, how many ink colors your design needs and how long the current wait is.

Parts, prototypes and one-offs

3D printing and prototyping 2

A different kind of printing. One option is a makerspace where you learn the machine and run it yourself. The other is a shop that takes your CAD file and hands back a part.

For a quoted job, four things move the price

Quantity

Setup is the expensive part. The first 100 cost a lot more per piece than the next 400.

Do thisAsk for the price at two or three quantities. The jump from 250 to 500 is often small.

Watch forDon’t order 2,000 of something with a date, a price or a phone number that might change.

Paper and finish

Heavier stock, coatings, folds, die cuts and binding each add a step.

Do thisAsk to feel samples. A slightly lighter paper can save real money on a big run.

Watch forGlossy coatings are hard to write on. Skip them on appointment cards and forms.

Color

Full color costs more than black and white, and matching an exact brand color costs more again.

Do thisTell the shop if your logo color has to match. They’ll steer you to the right press.

Watch forColors on a screen are lit from behind. Paper never looks quite as bright.

Speed

Rush jobs jump the line, and you pay for it.

Do thisGive the shop your real deadline up front. A few extra days is the cheapest upgrade there is.

Watch for“Same day” usually means certain products, small quantities and a file that’s ready to print.

Give every shop the same specs, or the quotes won’t compare

Send this list to two or three shops. If one quote is far lower, check that it’s the same paper and the same quantity.

How it works

How a print job goes, start to finish

Start with the date you need it in your hands, then work backward. A proof and a pickup run both take time.

  1. Decide what it is.Size, quantity and where it’s going: a counter, a mailbox, a wall or a fence.
  2. Pick the kind of shop.Counter for speed, print shop for quality and quantity, sign shop for big and outdoor.
  3. Ask what file they want.Usually a PDF at final size. Sign and apparel shops often want the original vector logo.
  4. Get the quote in writing.Paper, quantity, finishing and the due date, all on one line.
  5. Check the proof like a stranger.Read every number and name. Scan the QR code. Then have someone else do it.
  6. Approve, and stop editing.Changes after approval cost money and days.
  7. Open the box at pickup.Check the count and the color before you leave the shop.

Printing tips that are specific to Bend

01

Print shops keep weekday hours

Minuteman Press, Abracadabra, Premier Printing Solutions and XPress Printing all list Monday to Friday. If Saturday is your only day, send the file by Thursday or use a copy counter.

02

The sun and wind are hard on banners

High-desert sun fades ink and afternoon wind tears cheap vinyl. For anything staying outside, ask for outdoor-rated material, hemmed edges, grommets and wind slits.

03

A building sign usually needs a permit

The City of Bend regulates business signs, and most permanent ones need a permit. FASTSIGNS and M.C. Smith Signs both list permitting as part of the job. Ask before you pay for a size the city won’t allow.

04

Sisters is closer than it looks

XPress Printing is in Sisters but picks up and delivers free across Central Oregon. Don’t rule out a shop in Sisters or Redmond for a bigger job.

05

You can mail a whole neighborhood

Every Door Direct Mail sends a postcard to every address on a mail route, with no list to buy. It’s a good fit for a restaurant, a landscaper or a new shop that wants one part of town.

06

Summer is event season

Bend’s calendar fills up from June through September with races, festivals and markets. If your shirts or banners are for a summer event, ask about the current wait on your first call.

Expensive mistakes

How print jobs go wrong

The logo came from a website. Screen images are small. Blown up on a banner they turn fuzzy. Send the original vector file.

Nobody ordered a proof. A proof costs a little time. A wrong phone number on 1,000 cards costs the whole job.

The color ran to the edge with no bleed. You get a thin white line down one side. Ask the shop how much bleed they want.

The deadline was a guess. “Friday” to you might mean Friday at 5 to the shop. Say the time you need it, and why.

The quotes weren’t for the same thing. Different paper or quantity makes the cheap quote meaningless.

The QR code was never scanned. Test it from a printed proof with a real phone before the full run.
