Things to Do in La Pine, Oregon

La Pine is where the Central Oregon day gets quieter and more outdoorsy. Think Newberry volcano country, the Upper Deschutes, fishing lakes, campsites and long stretches of forest - not a packed downtown itinerary.

01Local shortlist
Upper Deschutes

LaPine State Park

Best for: The easiest all-around La Pine outdoor day

If you only choose one La Pine-area base, make it the state park. The Upper Deschutes, forest, multi-use trails and campground give you several ways to spend a day without driving between stops.

LaPine State Park

The Big Tree

Best for: A quick old-growth stop

A short, simple reason to get out of the car inside the state park. Pair it with river time or a trail rather than making it the whole outing.

Newberry Caldera

Paulina Lake

Best for: The classic Newberry lake day

Paulina is the most complete Newberry base: lake access, fishing, paddling, nearby trails and easy connections to the falls, peak and obsidian flow.

Good to know: High-elevation access and services are seasonal.

Newberry Caldera

East Lake

Best for: A quieter volcanic lake day

East Lake feels a little more removed than Paulina and is especially good when fishing, paddling or camping is the main reason you came into the caldera.

Good to know: Seasonal access; check current Newberry conditions.

Newberry Caldera

Paulina Peak

Best for: The giant-view payoff

When the road is open, the peak is the fastest way to understand the scale of Newberry. You get the caldera, lakes, Cascades and high desert in one view.

Good to know: The road to the summit is seasonal and conditions vary.

Newberry Caldera

Big Obsidian Flow

Best for: Walking on the volcanic landscape

One of the most distinctive short hikes in Central Oregon. The black obsidian and pumice make the geology feel immediate instead of abstract.

Good to know: Exposed terrain can be hot; stay on the trail and leave obsidian where it is.

Newberry Caldera

Paulina Falls

Best for: A short waterfall stop

Easy to add to a Newberry loop and a good choice for mixed groups that do not all want a longer hike. The falls pair naturally with Paulina Lake or the peak road.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument

Lava Cast Forest

Best for: A quieter geology stop

Lava molds of ancient trees make this a different kind of Newberry experience than the caldera. It is less dramatic than the peak, but more peaceful and very Central Oregon.

Good to know: Forest roads and seasonal conditions can affect access.

West of La Pine

Wickiup Reservoir

Best for: Fishing and bigger-water recreation

Wickiup is less polished than a resort lake and that is the appeal. Come when fishing, boating or camping is the activity - not when you are looking for a cute lakeside village.

Good to know: Water levels and access can vary significantly by season.

A classic Central Oregon reservoir day, especially for anglers and wildlife watchers. This is a destination for people who actually want to be on or beside the water for hours.

Upper Deschutes River

Best for: Quiet river country

South of Bend, the Deschutes feels slower and less urban. Use La Pine State Park and established access points rather than trying to invent your own river entry.

Rosland Campground + Day Use Area

Best for: A simple close-to-town river stop

Useful when you want water and a picnic without committing to the caldera or reservoirs. This is the low-key La Pine option that fits into a shorter day.

La Pine

Frontier Heritage Park

Best for: A town-based family break

La Pine is mainly an outdoor basecamp, but the park gives you a practical in-town stop when the day does not need another drive.

Know before you go

La Pine is a basecamp, not a shopping destination.

Come south for Newberry, river access, lakes, fishing, camping and forest. If you want restaurants and walkable storefronts to be the main activity, Sisters or downtown Bend is a better fit.

Newberry can fill the entire day.

Paulina Lake, East Lake, the peak, falls and obsidian flow sit close enough together that there is no reason to rush off to another region.

Seasonality is a real constraint here.

High-elevation roads, campgrounds and visitor services can open late and close early. Check current Forest Service conditions before driving deep into Newberry or reservoir country.

Water levels change the reservoir experience.

Wickiup and other reservoirs can look very different later in the season. If fishing or boating is the purpose of the trip, check current conditions first.
