What moves the price

  • Hourly + retainer. Typical for family, criminal, business and lawsuits. You pay a deposit and the lawyer bills against it. Ask for attorney and paralegal rates separately and whether you get monthly statements.
  • Flat fee. Common for wills and trusts, simple divorces and business formation. Ask exactly what’s included and what costs extra.
  • Contingency. Standard for injury cases: a percentage of what you recover, nothing if you lose. Whether costs come out before or after the percentage, and whether it rises at trial, both matter. Oregon requires contingency agreements in writing.
  • Experience. In the OSB survey, rates rise with years in practice; lawyers admitted 30+ years averaged $384 statewide.

Contingency math, before you sign

Whether case costs come out before or after the lawyer’s percentage changes what you take home.

Legal problems that are very Central Oregon

Water is law here

Irrigation districts, canal piping and well rights are everyday Central Oregon issues. Bryant, Lovlien & Jarvis, Schwabe and Peterkin Burgess list water law, which is rare in a city this size.

HOAs everywhere

From Broken Top to NW Crossing, many Bend homes come with CC&Rs. Francis Hansen & Martin, Peterkin Burgess and Bristlecone Law list HOA work or disputes.

Acreage brings boundary fights

Easements, access roads and fences on rural lots outside town lead to real property litigation, which Bristlecone Law lists in detail.

Tribal and Indian Country law

With the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs an hour north, BBK (from its Karnopp Petersen merger) and Schwabe both list Native American law practices.

Lots of small businesses

Breweries, outdoor brands and remote founders mean a lot of LLC, lease and buy-sell work. Haskett Williams Monaghan even lists valuing a business in divorce.

Crashes on mountain roads

Snowy highways, cyclists on Century Drive and boats on the lakes show up in local injury practices. Telaré Law lists boat accidents; High Desert Law takes dram shop cases.

Renting, running a business or planning an estate here? Our Bend legal tips cover the Oregon rules (rent caps, short-term rental permits, the $1 million estate tax) that trip people up.

Before you call: what to have and what to ask

Receptionists decide fast whether a firm can help. Lead with the type of case and your deadline, then ask these.

Have ready

  • Your deadline or court date, and the case number if there is one
  • A one-page timeline of what happened, with dates
  • Names of everyone involved (the firm must check for conflicts)
  • The papers: notices, contracts, leases, citations, letters
  • Key texts and emails, saved somewhere you won’t lose them
  • Insurance information if anyone was hurt or anything was damaged
  • What outcome you actually want

Ask the firm

  • How many cases like mine have you handled in Deschutes County?
  • Who will do the work: you, an associate or a paralegal? What are their rates?
  • Is this hourly, flat fee or contingency? Can I see the fee agreement before I commit?
  • How big is the retainer, and is unused money refunded?
  • What costs are separate (filing fees, experts, depositions)?
  • What’s a realistic timeline and range of outcomes?
  • How fast do you return calls and emails, and who is my contact?
  • What is your Oregon State Bar number? (Then check it at osbar.org.)

Questions people ask about lawyers in Bend

Who is the best lawyer in Bend?

The right lawyer depends on the problem. A strong estate planner is the wrong call for a DUII. Use the “What happened?” chooser on this page, then call two or three Bend firms that focus on that area and compare how they answer and what they charge.

How do I check that a Bend lawyer is licensed?

Search the lawyer’s name in the Oregon State Bar licensee directory (osbar.org). It shows the bar number, whether the license is active and the admission date. Check the individual lawyer, not just the firm. Every firm on this page had at least one lawyer looked up on October 24, 2026.

How much do lawyers in Bend charge per hour?

The Oregon State Bar’s 2022 Economic Survey put the 2021 average hourly rate for private-practice lawyers in its Eastern Oregon region, which includes Deschutes County, at $288 (median $288), versus $344 statewide. Family law averaged $280 an hour in that region. Rates have risen since, so ask each firm. Injury cases are usually contingency, and wills, trusts and simple divorces are often flat-fee.

Is there free legal help in Bend?

Yes. Legal Aid Services of Oregon’s Central Oregon office at 42 NW Greeley Ave helps people with low income on civil cases (541-385-6944). Deschutes Public Library’s Lawyer in the Library offers free 30-minute online consults on the first and third Wednesdays, 5 to 8 p.m. The courthouse’s Family Law Facilitator reviews divorce and custody forms.

What does the Oregon State Bar Lawyer Referral Service cost?

The bar matches you with a lawyer, and the first consultation is up to 30 minutes for no more than $50. After that, fees are between you and the lawyer. The bar’s Modest Means Program offers reduced rates for eligible moderate-income clients in some kinds of cases.

What happens after a DUII arrest in Bend?

There are two tracks: the criminal case in Deschutes County Circuit Court and your license with DMV. If you failed or refused a breath test, DMV must receive your hearing request by 11:59 p.m. on the 10th day after the arrest. Talk to a DUII lawyer right away about both, including whether diversion is an option.

Where is the Deschutes County courthouse?

At 1100 NW Bond St in downtown Bend, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays (541-388-5300). An expansion with a new entrance and two more courtrooms opened in April 2026. Juvenile cases are heard on NW Britta St.

Can I handle small claims without a lawyer?

Yes. Oregon small claims covers cases up to $10,000, and lawyers generally can’t appear without the court’s permission. Deschutes County offers volunteer mediation by phone before small claims hearings.

What is a licensed paralegal in Oregon?

Oregon now licenses paralegals to give limited help in some family law and landlord-tenant matters without a lawyer, which can cost less. Larson Family Law in Bend lists a licensed family law paralegal on staff.

Can a lawyer licensed in another state help me in Bend?

For Oregon court cases, you need a lawyer licensed in Oregon. Immigration is federal law, so an immigration lawyer licensed in any state can represent you. Abogada Ashley Immigration, for example, lists a California license.

How we built this, and sources

All Things Bend checked every firm on its own website on October 24, 2026: office, phone and the practice areas the firm lists. We looked up at least one lawyer per firm in the Oregon State Bar licensee directory the same day. We don’t rate lawyers. Firm photos come from each firm’s own site and link back to it. This guide is general information, not legal advice, and reading it doesn’t create a lawyer-client relationship.
