Bend's holiday-light season is easy to over-plan from stale event pages. This guide separates what is actually confirmed for 2026 from traditions whose organizers have not published this year's dates yet. Save it now, then check back as November and December schedules fill in.
2026 holiday-lights status board
This is the section to screenshot.
| Bend-area holiday lights / event | 2026 status as of Sept. 3 | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Bend Christmas Tree Lighting | Confirmed | Saturday, December 5, 2026 |
| Old Mill District holiday season / SantaLand | 2026 dates pending | Official holiday page is still displaying its 2025 schedule |
| Tumalo Creek Holiday Lights Paddle Parade | 2026 date pending | Official annual event page is active, but does not currently publish a 2026 date |
| Sunriver Resort holiday light show / Traditions | 2026 schedule pending | We could not verify a published 2026 holiday-light schedule yet |
| Residential / neighborhood lights | Too early to verify | Individual displays can change every year; we update these closer to December |
Why we do it this way: A holiday guide is only useful if the date is real. The previous version of this page mixed 2025 dates into a page titled 2026. That is fixed.
Downtown Bend Christmas Tree Lighting - confirmed for Dec. 5, 2026
The Downtown Bend Business Association’s current 2026 event calendar lists the Community Christmas Tree Lighting for Saturday, December 5, 2026.
The latest dedicated tree-lighting page still contains the prior season’s detailed schedule, but it confirms the newer event setup moved to Brandis Square at Wall Street and Greenwood Avenue. The recent format included Santa, choir performances, hot chocolate, warming areas and the actual tree countdown around 6 p.m.
For 2026, treat the date as confirmed and the exact hour-by-hour programming as something to re-check when DBBA refreshes the event detail page.
How we would plan it
If you want a simple Bend holiday night:
- Park downtown before the main crowd arrives.
- Walk through Drake Park / Mirror Pond if sidewalks are clear.
- Head to Brandis Square for the tree event.
- Get dinner downtown afterward instead of trying to move the car immediately when everyone leaves.
If you are bringing young kids, getting there early is worth more than trying to optimize the perfect tree-lighting viewpoint.
Old Mill District holiday lights + SantaLand - tradition is real, 2026 dates are not posted yet
The Old Mill District Holiday Happenings page is live, but as of this update it is still publishing 2025 dates for Santa’s helicopter arrival, SantaLand and Tree of Joy.
That means we are not copying those dates into a 2026 guide.
What is reasonable to expect based on the recurring holiday program:
- district-wide holiday decorations and lights
- SantaLand / Santa visits
- Tree of Joy charitable giving
- seasonal shopping and restaurant events
- riverfront walks that work well after dark
What is not yet verified for 2026:
- Santa’s arrival date/time
- SantaLand opening and closing dates
- individual SantaLand hours
- Tree of Joy deadlines
- special caroler/event dates
Is the Old Mill still worth going to for lights even without an event?
Yes. The Old Mill is one of the easiest places in Bend to make a casual holiday-lights walk because you have the Deschutes River, pedestrian paths, food/drinks and stores in one area.
You do not need SantaLand to be open for the district to work as an evening holiday stop.
Tumalo Creek Holiday Lights Paddle Parade - watch for the 2026 announcement
The Holiday Lights Paddle Parade is one of Bend’s genuinely distinctive holiday traditions: paddlers decorate kayaks, canoes and paddleboards with battery-powered lights and move down the Deschutes through the Old Mill area.
Tumalo Creek Holiday Lights Paddle Parade
The official event page is active and describes the annual format, but it does not currently show a confirmed 2026 date.
So: put this on your December radar, but do not build a trip around a date from an old article yet.
Best viewing once the date is announced
Tumalo Creek’s event information points spectators toward the paved Deschutes River paths and the Old Mill District / Flag Bridge area.
A few practical notes:
- arrive before full darkness if you have never walked the river path
- bring a headlamp or small flashlight for getting back to the car, but do not shine it at paddlers
- keep dogs controlled around a crowded dark riverfront
- expect cold air along the water
- if paths are icy, choose a stationary viewing point instead of walking the entire route
Sunriver Resort holiday lights - do not use the old 2025 showtimes
Sunriver is an easy holiday side trip from Bend, and its holiday season traditionally includes lights and a larger Traditions calendar of winter activities.
But as of September 3, we could not verify an official 2026 holiday light-show schedule from Sunriver Resort.
That means the old nightly showtimes from 2025 are not being carried forward here.
If Sunriver is a must-do for your trip, check the resort’s current events/Traditions information in November before locking the evening into your itinerary.
The best holiday-lights route in Bend - once schedules are live
For visitors or locals who just want one good evening, this is the route we would use rather than zig-zagging around town chasing individual houses.
Route A: Downtown + Old Mill
Best for: easiest evening, visitors, dinner/drinks, minimal driving
- Downtown Bend / Brandis Square
- Drake Park / Mirror Pond stroll if conditions are good
- Drive or rideshare to the Old Mill
- Walk the river and decorated shopping district
- End with dinner, dessert or a drink
On December 5, build the route around the confirmed Downtown tree-lighting event.
Route B: Old Mill + Paddle Parade
Best for: the most Bend-specific holiday-lights experience
Once Tumalo Creek publishes the 2026 date:
- Eat early in or near the Old Mill
- Find a river viewing area before the parade
- Watch the lit boats on the Deschutes
- Walk the district lights afterward after some of the crowd disperses
Route C: Bend + Sunriver
Best for: families making a full holiday afternoon/evening of it
If Sunriver publishes a 2026 light show or Traditions event you want to see, do Bend earlier in the day and Sunriver after dark. Remember that winter road conditions south of Bend can be completely different from dry pavement in town.
What about the “best neighborhoods” for Christmas lights?
This page used to list streets and neighborhoods as if they were guaranteed annual attractions.
That is not how residential lights work.
A family can go huge one year and skip the next. A house can sell. A coordinated block can stop coordinating. Construction or parking complaints can change access.
Our 2026 approach
We will add specific residential displays only after they are confirmed for the season.
Until then, neighborhoods that are pleasant for a general winter evening drive - without promising a particular house display - include areas around:
- Northwest Crossing
- older westside / Drake Park neighborhoods
- Awbrey Butte
- larger east/southeast Bend subdivisions
But do not drive 25 minutes because an old blog promised a synchronized display on a specific street.
How to see residential lights without being that car
Holiday displays can create real headaches for the people who live there.
A few rules:
- do not block driveways or mailboxes
- do not stop in a travel lane for a photo
- keep music inside your car
- turn off high beams around pedestrians and parked cars
- do not walk onto lawns or private property
- take trash with you
- if a street is packed, loop back later instead of making a three-point turn in someone’s driveway
If you get out to walk, park legally and leave room for emergency vehicles.
Holiday lights with kids
For small kids, the “best” lights plan is usually shorter than the adult plan.
Try:
- one anchor event
- one walking area
- cocoa/dessert
- done
Dragging a tired four-year-old through three neighborhoods because Dad found a “Top 17 Bend Christmas Lights” list is not a holiday tradition anyone needs.
Easy kid-friendly combination
Downtown tree lighting + hot chocolate + dinner is enough for a full December night.
On another night, do Old Mill lights/SantaLand after its 2026 schedule is published.
Cold, snow and ice: Bend-specific planning
December in Bend can mean clear dry pavement at 4 p.m. and black ice later that night.
Bring:
- warm layers
- gloves
- shoes with traction
- a headlamp if you are walking darker river paths
- a blanket in the car if you are driving around with kids
If it has snowed or thawed/refrozen, treat sidewalks and parking lots as part of the event logistics.
For a Sunriver trip, check road/weather conditions before leaving Bend rather than assuming the 20-mile drive will feel like city streets.
Pair holiday lights with something else
A few easy combinations:
- Christmas in Bend
- Downtown shopping + tree lighting
- Old Mill lights + ice skating
- lights + a cozy dinner
- holiday event + Bend breweries
- Sunriver holiday stop + dinner in Sunriver
Do not overload the itinerary. December evenings get cold early.
When this guide will get another update
The best time for a second holiday-lights verification pass is late October through November 2026, when Old Mill, Tumalo Creek, Sunriver and other local organizers publish their actual holiday calendars.
As of September 3:
- Downtown date: confirmed
- Old Mill 2026 specifics: pending
- Paddle Parade 2026 date: pending
- Sunriver 2026 light schedule: pending
- residential displays: too early to responsibly list
That is less exciting than inventing a complete December calendar in September - but it is much more useful when you actually show up.
