A real tree needs an end-of-season plan. In Bend, the main choices are a scout collection, approved yard-debris disposal or a recycling drop-off. The right choice depends on your address, tree type and whether you can move the tree yourself.
Christmas 2026 tree pickup status
Upcoming pickup dates for the Christmas 2026 / January 2027 season were not confirmed in the sources reviewed October 1, 2026.
The Bend scout collection page still lists December 27–28, 2025 and January 3–4, 2026. Those dates are from the previous season. Do not put a tree out based on that schedule.
The county’s holiday recycling page also includes seasonal deadlines without clearly identifying the upcoming season. Use it for preparation guidance, then confirm the new collection and free-drop-off window before making a trip.
Christmas tree pickup in Bend
Scout collection: check the zone map first
TakeYourTree.com divides Bend into northeast, southeast, southwest and northwest zones. Start with the map, not the compass direction in your street name. Its previous-season page requests stripped trees at the curb and a suggested donation.
Use the current zone link for payment and special instructions once the new schedule appears. Check the site’s instructions for addresses outside the mapped area. Do not assume a Sunriver or Redmond route follows Bend’s dates.
A curbside collection is not indoor removal. You still need to undecorate the tree and get it outside. If that is the part you cannot manage, arrange carry-out help separately.
Your yard-debris service
Deschutes County advises cutting natural trees into pieces that fit in a yard-debris cart with the lid closed. Confirm acceptance and any preparation requirements with your hauler before using this option.
Having a regular trash cart does not mean you have yard-debris service. Do not leave a whole tree beside the cart without arranging the appropriate collection.
Paid removal or hauling
For a tree that needs to be carried downstairs or removed from an office, ask a hauling or home-service provider for a specific quote. Explain whether the job includes indoor carry-out, removing the stand and transporting the tree to an appropriate facility.
We have not verified a dedicated local paid tree-removal package with current rates. Get the scope in writing rather than assuming a general junk-hauling price includes the whole job.
Christmas tree recycling and drop-off
The Deschutes County holiday recycling guide points residents toward Deschutes Recycling and county transfer facilities. Its posted seasonal instructions exclude Alfalfa from the free tree-drop-off offer. Confirm participating locations, hours, fees and the current seasonal window before driving.
| Option | Useful when | Confirm first |
|---|---|---|
| Scout curbside collection | You can move the tree outside | New-season dates, zone, donation and curb placement |
| Yard-debris cart | You have the service and can cut the tree to fit | Hauler acceptance and lid-closed requirement |
| Recycling drop-off | You can safely transport the tree | Facility, hours, tree type and current charges |
| Paid carry-out and hauling | Indoor removal is the hard part | Labor, access, transport and disposal included |
Before transport, remove decorations and secure the tree to your vehicle appropriately. Avoid loose needles and branches obstructing the driver’s view.
Before your tree leaves the house
- Photograph the decorated tree if you want to recreate the look next year.
- Remove the topper, ornaments, hooks, lights, tinsel and ribbon.
- Check inner branches for ornaments that slid toward the trunk.
- Remove the stand and any remaining metal or plastic.
- Protect the route through the house; a tree bag or floor covering can simplify cleanup.
- Follow the selected pickup or drop-off instructions.
If a team will carry the tree out, tell it about stairs, narrow doors, pets and the tree’s size. Keep your stand unless disposal of it was explicitly agreed.
Flocked trees, artificial trees and wreaths
Flocked trees need a separate answer. Do not assume artificial snow is acceptable in natural-tree recycling. The Environmental Center’s recycling guidance states that flocked trees are not recyclable through the natural-tree stream; confirm disposal with your hauler or facility.
An artificial tree does not belong in a natural-tree collection. If it is usable, consider reuse or donation after confirming a recipient wants it. For a damaged artificial tree, ask the facility about its mixed materials.
Natural wreaths and garland can contain hidden wire, frames and plastic decorations. Strip those materials before checking composting acceptance. If they cannot be separated, ask how to dispose of the item.
What about broken holiday lights and wrapping?
The county says broken string lights belong in the designated scrap-metal collection at Deschutes Recycling or county transfer stations, not the blue commingle cart. Check current facility instructions.
Save reusable gift bags, ribbon and bows. Packaging rules depend on material: plain paper and flattened cardboard differ from glitter, metallic coatings, foam and plastic wrap. Use the county’s linked guide rather than treating all holiday packaging as recyclable.
Costs and missed pickups
The scout page’s suggested donation belongs to its previous-season listing. Check the current amount when the new schedule is published. Do not treat a past free-drop-off deadline as a permanent year-round offer.
If a pickup is missed, use the current zone contact, explain where the tree is and ask about the next route. Do not move it into a road or leave it out indefinitely. A drop-off or hauler-approved alternative may be simpler.
Christmas tree removal FAQ
When do scouts pick up Christmas trees in Bend after Christmas 2026?
The Christmas 2026 / January 2027 dates were not verified at this update. Check the official Bend-area collection page; its displayed January 2026 dates are from the previous season.
Can I recycle a flocked Christmas tree in Bend?
Do not place it in natural-tree recycling. Confirm disposal with your hauler or the facility because flocking changes acceptance.
Can I leave my Christmas tree next to the trash can?
Only if your hauler has instructed you to do so for an arranged collection. Ordinary trash service and yard-debris service have different requirements.
Do scout volunteers carry Christmas trees out of the house?
The advertised collection is curbside. Arrange indoor carry-out separately unless a provider explicitly agrees to it.
