Find the right gym for you

Tap what you’re after. You’ll get a quick tip, and the gym list below narrows to the places that offer it on their own site.

Total beginner

Look for a structured intro program or fundamentals class instead of jumping into the main class. Danzig MMA requires its intro sessions even if you trained elsewhere.

Kids & teens

Programs are split by age, from 3-year-olds at SBG to 14-year-olds in Clark’s and Connection Rio’s youth Muay Thai. Most offer a free trial class.

Women’s classes

SBG runs women’s-only BJJ, and Connection Rio has women’s-only Muay Thai kickboxing plus BJJ and self-defense. Danzig’s Angela Danzig is an active pro fighter who coaches striking.

Full MMA

True MMA classes mix striking, wrestling and ground work, including cage work. Most gyms want you to build striking and grappling basics first.

Striking only

Muay Thai, kickboxing and boxing. You never have to take a takedown. Boxing-only gyms are the most focused option if you want hands and footwork.

Grappling & wrestling

No-Gi jiu-jitsu, judo and wrestling. For gi BJJ depth, see our jiu-jitsu guide.

Want to compete

Ask who on staff corners fighters, how often they compete and how sparring is run. Danzig has a fighters practice, Central Oregon Boxing has a fight team, and SMPR preps Muay Thai fighters.

Fitness, no sparring

Every gym here makes sparring optional or separate, but bag-and-pad conditioning classes (Danzig’s HIT-IT, BoXiT) skip partner contact entirely.

Drop-in / visiting

Only a few gyms post drop-in terms. Danzig lists $30 single classes and a $40 day pass; Connection Rio approves visiting BJJ players by phone.

MMA, Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling and BJJ explained

MMA is built from a few core arts. Here’s what each one is, who it suits, and where to learn it around Bend.

MMA

Striking, wrestling and submissions in one fight, usually in a cage. Classes connect the pieces: takedowns against the fence, ground-and-pound defense, getting back up.

Good for
People who want the complete picture, or plan to compete
Around Bend
Danzig MMA, SBG Bend, Connection Rio (Sat), Prineville Jiu-Jitsu

Muay Thai

Thailand’s “art of eight limbs”: punches, kicks, elbows, knees and the clinch. Lots of pad work and shin conditioning.

Good for
A striking base that carries straight into MMA; huge conditioning
Around Bend
Danzig MMA, SBG Bend, Clark’s, Connection Rio, SMPR (Redmond)

Kickboxing

Punches and kicks, usually without the elbows and clinch of Muay Thai. Many gyms use the word for fitness-style pad classes.

Good for
Fitness-first striking, women’s classes
Around Bend
Connection Rio women’s kickboxing, SMPR

Boxing

Hands only: footwork, head movement, defense and combinations. Every MMA striker borrows from it.

Good for
Cardio, hand speed, a focused skill
Around Bend
Central Oregon Boxing, Danzig MMA, SBG Bend, SMPR; BoXiT for no-contact fitness boxing

Wrestling

Takedowns, control and scrambles. In MMA, the wrestler usually decides where the fight happens.

Good for
Kids (the classic base), future MMA fighters
Around Bend
Deschutes Mat Club (K–8), Redmond Grappling Academy youth wrestling, SBG Bend, Danzig MMA

Brazilian jiu-jitsu

Ground grappling with chokes and joint locks; you “tap” to end a round, so you can train hard safely. No-Gi is the MMA-style version.

Good for
Self-defense, smaller people, lifelong training
Around Bend
Every grappling gym here; see our jiu-jitsu guide for gi academies

Judo

Olympic throwing art: grips, trips and throws, plus pins and submissions on the ground.

Good for
Takedowns in the clinch, falling safely

MMA gym or a boxing, Muay Thai or BJJ gym?

Bend has both. Which is better depends on what you want out of it.

Pick an MMA gym if…

  • You want striking and grappling under one membership. Danzig’s $189 intro covers both arts.
  • You’re thinking about an amateur MMA fight someday. You need cage work and wrestling.
  • Self-defense is the goal: you learn to stay standing and what to do on the ground.
  • You get bored easily. Rotating between boxing, Muay Thai and grappling keeps it fresh.

Try: Danzig MMA, SBG Bend, Prineville Jiu-Jitsu

Pick a specialist if…

  • You only want to box. A boxing-only gym has more boxing classes and boxers to learn from.
  • You never want to be taken down or pinned. Choose striking only.
  • You want to compete in one sport, like amateur boxing, Muay Thai or a BJJ tournament.
  • You want gi jiu-jitsu, which most MMA gyms don’t focus on.

Try: Central Oregon Boxing, SMPR (Muay Thai), Deschutes Mat Club (wrestling), BJJ academies

The middle path: several “jiu-jitsu” schools here also teach striking. Clark’s pairs Muay Thai with BJJ, and Connection Rio runs Muay Thai and a Saturday Muay Thai/MMA class, so you can start with one art and add the other in the same building.

Real technique and belt tests. Wrestling season at Deschutes Mat Club starts in kindergarten. Kids Muay Thai starts at 8 (Connection Rio) or 9 (Clark’s).

SBG runs teen classes and striking from 13. Danzig lets mature teens under 16 into adult classes. Central Oregon Boxing has youth boxing, and BoXiT’s program runs to 17.

Women’s MMA, kickboxing and self-defense classes

If walking into a room full of guys is the barrier, these options help:

  • Connection Rio: women’s-only Muay Thai kickboxing Monday 6:15pm and Friday 9am, plus women’s BJJ & self-defense Tuesday 5pm.
  • SBG Bend: women’s-only BJJ taught by female coaches, with its own free trial class.
  • Danzig MMA: no women-only class, but co-owner Angela Danzig is an active pro MMA, boxing and Muay Thai fighter and teaches striking classes.
  • Clark’s: Liz Casner and Crystal Oconnell are among the coaches listed for jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai.
  • Deschutes Mat Club: girls wrestle in the youth club, and the club posts updates on middle school girls wrestling.

Ask whether women-only classes are free to try with your membership, and whether you can sit in on a co-ed class first.

Your first MMA class: what to expect

  1. Book the free class. Danzig, SBG and Connection Rio book online or by form, and Connection Rio wants the waiver done before you arrive. Show up 10 minutes early. Danzig asks you to arrive early to sign in.
  2. Warm-up. Expect jogging, shrimping, sprawls or shadowboxing. It’s harder than it looks at 3,600 feet, so bring water.
  3. Technique. The coach shows a move, then you drill it with a partner at low speed. In an intro class everyone is new.
  4. Drills or rounds. Pad rounds for striking, positional drills for grappling. Beginners don’t free-spar on day one; at Danzig, sparring is optional and coach-monitored.
  5. Stick around. At Danzig you can stay and watch the next class, a good way to see what the advanced classes look like.

Clothes: fitted athletic wear. For grappling: no zippers, buttons, buckles, pockets or tank tops (Danzig’s rule). Trim your nails, skip jewelry, and never walk on the mats in street shoes.

What gear to buy, and when

Day one

  • Workout clothes and a water bottle
  • A towel (SMPR asks for one)
  • Mouthguard if there’s any chance of live work. SMPR requires one for sparring.

Month one

  • Hand wraps
  • Boxing gloves. Gyms loan them at first, but your own are cleaner (SMPR’s advice).
  • Shin guards for Muay Thai
  • Rash guard and grappling shorts

If you get serious

  • MMA gloves and sparring headgear (ask your coach)
  • A gi, if you add gi jiu-jitsu
  • Wrestling shoes, which Danzig allows on the mats

Safety and sparring etiquette

  • Sparring is a choice. You can always say “not today” or “light, please.” A good gym respects that.
  • Match your partner. Go as hard as the less experienced person, never harder. Taking someone’s head off in drilling is the fastest way to lose partners.
  • Tap early, let go fast. In grappling, tap the moment a submission is on, and release the instant your partner taps.
  • Mouthguard always for live striking, and tell the coach about old injuries before class.
  • Hygiene is safety. Clean gear, clean clothes every session, shower after. Skip class if you have any skin rash. Danzig mops and disinfects its mats twice a day; ask how your gym does it.
  • Respect the coach’s call. When the coach says time or stop, stop.

Competing: amateur fights, rules and events in Oregon

Who regulates fights. The Oregon State Athletic Commission, part of the Oregon State Police, regulates unarmed combat sports. Licensed MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing and boxing competitors need an Oregon license plus a national license, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV bloodwork, two forms of ID, and an Oregon physical and eye exam. Fighters over 40 also file neurological, MRI, EKG and CT scan forms.

Amateur events. Oregon lets state-approved amateur organizations sanction amateur bouts, and they must honor each other’s medical suspensions (OAR 230-150-0040). We didn’t find a recurring MMA card in Bend, so ask your coach. Gyms with competition tracks include Danzig MMA (Friday fighters practice), Central Oregon Boxing (coach-approved amateur fight team) and SMPR (Muay Thai fight prep).

Wrestling. Deschutes Mat Club’s season builds to the OWA state tournament in late January, and the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond hosted the OWA Freestyle & Greco-Roman Championships in April 2026. Youth wrestlers need a USA Wrestling card ($65).
