                    • A jump rope. Ten minutes is a real workout. Do it in the garage.
                    • A thick mat. Bend floors are cold in January.

                    Winter rules for Bend

                    • Check the roads first. ODOT TripCheck has live cameras for the Parkway, Highway 97 and Century Drive.
                    • Warm up longer. Cold muscles and a cold garage are how January injuries happen.
                    • Drink more than you think. Bend sits at about 3,600 feet in the high desert, and winter air is dry inside and out.
                    • Walk inside. Larkspur’s indoor track is the best icy-day walk in town for $10.

                    Six things locals know

Before you join a gym in Bend

01Tour at the hour you will train

A gym that is empty at 11 am can have a line for every rack at 5:30 pm. Go once at your real time before you sign anything.

02January and smoke season are the crowded months

New Year’s resolutions fill every gym in January. In late summer, wildfire smoke pushes the runners and bikers indoors too. Join in a quiet month and you will see the gym as it usually is.

                    03Ask for the all-in price

Monthly rates rarely include the enrollment fee, the annual fee, childcare or classes. Ask what you will have paid after 12 months, and how to cancel.

                    04Check your insurance and HSA

Many Medicare and employer plans pay for a gym, and Bend Park & Rec takes several insurance fitness benefits. Some climbing gyms, CrossFit boxes and recovery spots accept HSA or FSA money with a letter of medical necessity.

                    05Park district lines matter

Juniper and Larkspur prices are for people who live inside the Bend Park & Rec district. Everyone else pays 20 percent more, which includes visitors.

                    06Freeze it for summer

Plenty of locals pause their membership in July and train on the trails and the river. Ask about holds before you join: most gyms charge a small fee.
