The short answer
Hire a licensed contractor who lists gas piping, get the permit, and ask them to size the line for everything you might add later (range, fireplace, BBQ, heater, generator). If you’re adding a lot of load, ask whether Cascade Natural Gas needs to upgrade your meter. Any outdoor trench needs an 811 locate first.

What’s different here
Permits and inspections
The City of Bend says gas piping and venting work can require a mechanical permit, and a water heater swap needs a plumbing permit. Outside city limits, Deschutes County issues permits. An inspector checks the pipe, the pressure test and the connections before they’re covered up.
Size for what you’ll add later
Gas line size depends on the total BTUs of everything on it and the length of the run. Adding a fire table and a patio heater to a line sized for a range can starve all three. It’s cheaper to run a larger line once than to dig twice.
Altitude and appliance setup
At Bend’s roughly 3,600 feet, many gas appliances need high-altitude settings or orifices from the manufacturer. Ask your installer to confirm each new appliance is set up for elevation.
Digging in Bend
Oregon law requires an 811 locate before digging; call at least two business days ahead (it’s free). Bend’s shallow soil and basalt can make trenching for outdoor lines slower than expected, so ask how rock is priced.
Smell gas?
Leave first, then call Cascade Natural Gas’s emergency line or 911 from outside. Don’t flip switches or start a car near the leak.

How a gas line project usually goes
- Make a list of every gas appliance you have now and might add, with BTU ratings.
- Get two or three quotes that state pipe size, route, permit and pressure test.
- Call 811 (or have the contractor do it) before any digging.
- Contractor pulls the permit and installs the line.
- Pressure test and inspection before walls or trenches are closed.
- Appliances are connected, set up for altitude and leak-checked.
Questions to ask before you hire
Ask
- Will you size the line for my future appliances too? What total BTUs are you designing for?
- Does my meter need an upgrade from Cascade Natural Gas?
- Who pulls the permit and schedules the inspection?
- What pipe material, and how deep for outdoor runs?
- Will you set each appliance up for Bend’s elevation?
- Is trenching and patching included, and how is rock priced?
Red flags
- No permit (“it’s just a small line”).
- Flexible appliance connectors run through walls or floors.
- No pressure test before closing up.
- Digging without an 811 locate.
Common questions
Do I need a permit to run a gas line in Bend?
Yes. The City of Bend says gas piping and venting work can require a mechanical permit, and water heater installs require a plumbing permit. Your contractor normally pulls it.
Who supplies natural gas in Bend?
Cascade Natural Gas. Contact them about new service or a larger meter; your contractor runs the piping on your side of the meter.
Can a plumber run a gas line?
Yes, many Bend plumbers do. Sunset Plumbing, Severson Plumbing and Deschutes Plumbing all list gas piping.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Get everyone out, then call Cascade Natural Gas’s emergency number or 911 from outside. Don’t use switches, phones or lighters inside.
