Pick the designer by the project, not by the prettiest photos.

Bend has a deep bench of interior designers for a town its size, mostly because of how many custom homes get built here. That makes the choice less about taste and more about fit. A studio that’s great at ground-up custom homes can be overkill for a living room. A furniture store’s designer can be perfect for a finished house and the wrong hire for a kitchen gut.

So this guide is sorted by what you’re doing. Find your kind of project, shortlist two or three firms whose past work looks like yours, and ask them all the same questions.

Full-service interior designers for custom homes and whole-home projects 13

These are the studios you bring in early, while the plans can still change. They pick the cabinets, tile, lighting and plumbing during construction, then carry the same thinking through furniture and art. Most have a waitlist, so call before you break ground, not after drywall.

Know what you’re hiring

Interior designer, decorator or design-build?

01

Interior designer

Handles what gets built in: cabinet layouts, tile, plumbing and lighting plans, flooring transitions, built-ins, and drawings for the contractor. Hire one when the project involves construction and decisions have deadlines that affect other trades.

02

Decorator or furnishing service

Handles what you can move: furniture, rugs, art, window treatments, paint and styling. Hire one when the house is finished and feels empty, or one room isn’t working. Don’t pay for full construction design if this is all you need.

03

Design-build firm

Designs the project and builds it, under one contract. One team to call, and nobody pointing fingers. The tradeoff is that the designer works for the builder, not independently for you. Great for remodels when you want it simple.

Timing

When to hire a designer for a custom home

Earlier than most people think. Cabinet sizes, lighting, plumbing locations, appliances and even furniture scale all change the drawings. If the designer shows up after drywall, the expensive decisions are already made.

  1. Set the budget and goals.Including a real number for furniture. It’s the part people forget.
  2. Assemble the team.Architect, builder and interior designer, ideally before plans are final.
  3. Develop plans with interiors in mind.Kitchen layout, lighting and built-ins shape the architecture.
  4. Set finish and fixture allowances.Allowances are guesses. Make them realistic for what you actually like.
  5. Lock long-lead selections.Windows, appliances, tile and custom lighting can take months.
  6. Coordinate drawings with the trades.Somebody has to own this. Find out who.
  7. Order furnishings on a parallel track. So the sofa shows up when the house is done, not six months later.

Fishhouse Design Studio’s website says most of its projects start two to four months after signing. Assume most good studios have a wait, and call early.

Money

How interior designers charge

Bend firms rarely publish prices, so we don’t guess at them here

There’s no standard pricing. A Bend designer may use one of these or several at once. The question to ask isn’t “do you mark up furniture?” It’s “show me every way your firm is paid on this project.”

Hourly

You pay for the time spent designing, sourcing, meeting and coordinating.

Good forSmall projects, consults and remodels where the scope is still fuzzy.

Watch forAsk for an estimate of total hours and how you’ll be told when you’re close to it.

Flat design fee

A defined scope is priced as one project fee.

Good forA clear project where you want to know the number up front.

Watch forRead the limits: how many revisions, how many site visits, and what counts as extra.

Percentage of project

The fee is a percentage of construction or furnishing costs.

Good forLarge builds where the designer manages a lot of moving parts.

Watch forThe fee grows when the budget grows. Ask what it’s a percentage of, exactly.

Markup on products

Furniture, fixtures or materials are bought through the designer with a markup.

Good forFurnishing projects, especially through a showroom.

Watch forAsk what the markup is and whether you could buy the same piece yourself.

Hybrid

A design fee plus a procurement margin and sometimes a management fee.

Good forMost full-service projects end up here.

Watch forThis is normal. Just get every piece of it in writing.

Split the budget into these buckets before design starts

Design feesConstructionCabinetry + built-insPlumbing + lighting fixturesFinish materialsFurnishingsWindow treatmentsArt + accessoriesFreight + shippingReceiving + storageDelivery + installContingency

This is how you avoid the classic Bend mistake: spending everything on the build and having nothing left to furnish it.

Design problems that are specific to Bend

01

The sun is brutal

Big west and south windows mean glare, heat and faded fabric. Plan window treatments while the house is being designed, not after you move in and can’t see the TV.

02

Snow, mud, dogs and gear

An entry that can’t handle ski boots, bikes, wet dogs and three kinds of jacket is a failed Bend entry. Mudrooms, tough flooring and gear storage come first.

03

The air is dry

Wood moves here. Ask how flooring, cabinets and furniture hold up in Central Oregon’s dry air, and don’t choose materials from photos taken in a humid place.

04

Indoor-outdoor living

Patios, decks and big sliding doors are the point of a Bend house. Plan indoor and outdoor furniture together, and think about where the smoke-season air filter goes.

05

Second homes and rentals

If the house sits empty or gets rented, talk about durability, an owner’s closet, deliveries when nobody’s home and how you’ll approve things from far away.

06

Design review boards

Many Bend-area resort and planned communities have design review rules, mostly for exteriors. If you’re building in one, ask whether the designer has worked there before.

Red flags

Slow down if you see any of these

The scope is vague. If the proposal doesn’t say what’s included and excluded, you’ll find out later, and it will cost money.

You can’t tell how they get paid. Fees, markups and purchasing should all be written down before you sign.

You don’t know who’s doing the work. The principal sells the job. Ask who you’ll talk to every week.

Nobody owns coordination. If neither the designer nor the builder is clearly responsible for the drawings matching the build, that’s your job now.

Lead times get ignored. If nobody’s talking about order dates until construction is underway, things will arrive late.

Allowances are treated as final costs. They’re estimates. Yours will go up if your taste is nicer than the allowance.

Do your homework

How to check a designer’s credentials in Oregon

If they also build

Any company doing construction work in Oregon needs a Construction Contractors Board license. Look it up for free at oregon.gov/ccb and check for complaints. This applies to design-build firms.

Designer credentials

As far as we could find, Oregon doesn’t require a state license for residential interior designers. NCIDQ is the main professional certification, and NKBA is the kitchen and bath one. A credential isn’t required to be good, but it tells you about training.

References that count

Ask to talk to a client whose project was the same type and size as yours, and to a builder the designer has worked with. Builders will tell you who is organized.

See the work in person

The Central Oregon Builders Association’s Tour of Homes each summer is the easiest way to walk through finished houses and see which designers did them.

Quick answers

Bend interior designer FAQs

Who are the best interior designers in Bend, Oregon?

It depends on the project, so this guide sorts firms by what they do. For a custom home or whole-home project, start with full-service studios like Design Bar, Harper House Design, Legum Design, Julanda Shannon Design and House of Milo. For kitchens and baths, look at Kirsti Wolfe Designs. For a remodel, Iron Roots Design, Society West Design and Neil Kelly are good starting points. Source Weekly readers voted Cedar + Sage Design best interior designer in Bend in 2025, with Iron Roots Design second.

How much does an interior designer cost in Bend?

There is no single price. Bend designers charge by the hour, by a flat design fee, as a percentage of the project, through a markup on furniture and materials, or with a mix of these. Most full-service projects use a mix. Ask each firm to show you every way they are paid on your project, and ask whether they have a project minimum. We don’t publish price ranges here because firms don’t publish theirs.

What is the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

A decorator works with what you can move: furniture, rugs, art, paint and window treatments. An interior designer also handles what gets built in: cabinet layouts, tile, plumbing and lighting plans, and drawings for your contractor. If your project needs a permit or a contractor, you want a designer who does construction work. If the house is finished and feels empty, a decorating or furnishing service may be all you need.

When should I hire an interior designer for a new home?

Earlier than most people think. For a custom home, bring the designer in while the plans can still change, alongside your architect and builder. Cabinet sizes, lighting, plumbing locations and furniture scale all affect the drawings. If the designer arrives after drywall, the most expensive decisions have already been made.

Do interior designers in Oregon need a license?

As far as we could find, Oregon does not require a state license to work as a residential interior designer. A 2025 bill, HB 2141, proposed a voluntary registry for commercial interior designers, and it was still in committee when we last checked. What you can verify: any company that does construction work in Oregon needs a Construction Contractors Board license, which you can look up for free, and designers may hold professional credentials such as NCIDQ certification.

Can I hire an interior designer for just a few hours?

Yes. Society West Design sells hourly packages, Element Design Collective offers homeowner consultation packages for finishes, and furniture stores such as Haven Home Style, NW Home Interiors and Bend Furniture & Design have designers who will help you furnish a room. Willem Hendrik Design and NW Home Interiors also work by virtual consultation.

Should I hire an interior designer or a design-build firm for a remodel?

A design-build firm, like Neil Kelly, Complements Home, FUSE Design + Build or Iron Roots Design, draws the project and builds it under one contract, so there is one team to call. An independent designer works for you and coordinates with a contractor you hire separately, which gives you more control over who builds it. Both work. Decide whether you would rather have one point of responsibility or an independent set of eyes.

Do Bend interior designers work on vacation homes and rentals?

Many do. Amy Troute Inspired Interior Design specifically designs vacation homes and income-producing rentals, and Patty Jones Design specializes in clients who live elsewhere. Ask any firm how they handle approvals, deliveries and installation when you are not in town.

Who does home staging in Bend?

Wyatt Jane Design specializes in staging unoccupied, unfurnished homes for sale. Ask about timing, how long the furniture stays and what an extension costs.

How do I choose between interior designers?

Shortlist two or three whose past projects look like yours, then ask each one the same questions. This page has a 20-question interview checklist you can check off, copy or print. Compare what is included, how they are paid, and who you will actually be working with. Style matters, but process and fit matter more.
