The short version. Watch the free St. Charles online class before the baby comes, save the Bend lactation line (541-706-4924), and know that there is a free drop-in group every Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. If feeding hurts or weight is a worry, skip the group and book a one-on-one visit.
Pick the right kind of help
| What is going on | Start here |
|---|---|
| Pregnant and want to be ready | The free online class, then the $50 class if you want more |
| Feeding is going fine but you have questions | Thursday Mommy and Me group, or La Leche League |
| Pain, latch trouble or supply worries | A one-on-one lactation visit this week |
| The pediatrician is watching weight | Call the lactation line and your pediatrician today |
| Going back to work | A lactation visit for pump fit and a plan, then the evening La Leche League meeting |
What a prenatal class should cover
- How milk comes in over the first days
- Positioning and latch, with practice on a doll
- How to tell the baby is getting enough
- How often newborns really feed, including at night
- Pumping and storing milk
- Bottles, and how a partner can help
- When to call for help
Before you leave the hospital
Ask a nurse or lactation consultant to watch a full feed, start to finish, before you are discharged. It is the easiest moment to get expert eyes on a latch. St. Charles lactation services also does infant weight checks and follow-up visits after you go home, so ask how to book one before you leave.
When it is not a group question
Groups are for support and everyday questions. Call your pediatrician promptly, not a group, if your baby has fewer wet diapers than you were told to expect, is very sleepy and hard to wake for feeds, or seems ill.

Common questions
Is a breastfeeding class the same as a lactation consultation?
No. A class teaches the basics to a group. A consultation is one-on-one, where a lactation consultant watches a feed and works on your specific problem. See the lactation consultant guide.
Is there free breastfeeding help in Bend?
Yes. The St. Charles online class is free, the Thursday Mommy and Me group is free, La Leche League meetings are free, and the free Family Connects nurse home visit includes lactation support.
Can my partner come to a class or group?
Partners are generally welcome at classes, and it helps. Groups vary, so ask the organizer if you are not sure.
What if we plan to formula-feed or combination-feed?
You are still welcome to ask for feeding help. Lactation staff and your pediatrician can talk through pumping, paced bottle-feeding and safe formula preparation without pressure.
Do I have to wait for a serious problem to ask for help?
No. Pain, doubt about whether the baby is getting enough, or just wanting someone to watch a feed are all good reasons to call.
Is there breastfeeding help in Spanish?
St. Charles lactation services offers interpreter services and publishes its support group flyer in Spanish.
