Know what to ask for

Types of massage, by pressure

One stone is feather light, five is very deep. Pressure can always be adjusted, so speak up on the table.

Swedish

Long, gliding strokes. The default relaxation massage.

Ask for it when you want to sleep well tonight.

Deep tissue

Slow, focused pressure into deeper muscle layers. Deep does not have to mean painful.

Tell them the specific spot and say when it is too much.

Sports

Stretching, trigger points and targeted work on the muscles your sport uses.

Best a day or two after a hard effort, not the morning of a race.

Hot stone

Warm basalt stones used as tools and placed on tight areas. Several places include it free.

Great in January. Not usually offered during pregnancy.

Cupping

Suction cups lift skin and tissue. Leaves round marks that fade in hours or days.

Skip it before a wedding or a swimsuit weekend.

Thai

Done clothed on a floor mat, with assisted stretches and acupressure.

Wear loose, stretchy clothes.

Prenatal

Side-lying or with a special cushion so you can lie face down safely.

Tell them your week of pregnancy when you book.

Lymphatic drainage

Very light, rhythmic strokes that move fluid. Used after surgery and for lymphedema.

For medical swelling, see a certified lymphedema therapist.

Craniosacral

Gentle holds on the head, neck and spine. Very quiet.

Often used for headaches, jaw tension and stress.

Reflexology

Pressure on points on the feet, and sometimes hands and ears.

Pair it with a foot soak after a long hike.

Ashiatsu

The therapist uses bars overhead and massages with their feet. Very deep, very broad pressure.

Ask EarthTouch. Few people in town do it.

The Bend version

  • After the mountain. Book sports or deep tissue the day after a big Bachelor day or a long ride on Phil’s, not the morning before.
  • Climbers. Smith Rock forearms and shoulders take a beating. Ask for focused work on forearms, lats and neck.
  • Ski season and holidays fill up. Book a week out from December through March, and earlier for Sunriver and resort spas.
  • Dry air. Bend sits around 3,600 feet in the high desert. Drink water before and after, and ask for extra oil or lotion in winter.

Make it covered

Insurance, PIP and HSA

Massage can be covered when it is part of treatment. Here is how to find out in five minutes.

  1. Call the number on your insurance card and ask whether massage therapy is covered on your plan.
  2. Ask whether you need a referral or prescription from a doctor, chiropractor or physical therapist.
  3. Ask how many visits are covered, and what your deductible and copay are.
  4. Find a practice that bills your plan (see the list), or ask for a superbill to submit yourself.
  5. Car accident? Open the PIP claim with the auto insurer first and bring the claim number and adjuster’s contact.

Who bills what

Oregon auto policies include personal injury protection, which is why accident massage is so commonly covered here. Coverage depends on your plan, so confirm before booking.

No surprises

Your first massage, step by step

  1. Book the therapist, not just the businessMassage style varies a lot inside one studio. Read the bios and pick someone whose specialties match your goal.
  2. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlyYou will fill out a health form. Mention injuries, surgeries, pregnancy and medications.
  3. Undress to your comfort levelMany people keep underwear on. You will be covered with a sheet the whole time except for the area being worked.
  4. Speak upSay “more pressure,” “less pressure,” or “skip my feet” at any point. A good therapist wants to know.
  5. Check what the minutes includeSome places count the 60 minutes as table time, others include talking and dressing. Ask.
  6. Drink water afterBend’s high desert air is dry, especially in winter. Plan an easy evening, not a hard workout.
  7. Know the cancellation ruleMost Bend studios want 12 to 24 hours’ notice and charge for no-shows.

Check the license

Massage therapists in Oregon are licensed by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists. A license takes 625 hours of education, a national exam, a state law exam and a background check. Many Bend therapists post their LMT number on their website.

CASCADA Bend

7 NW Bond St, downtown

The team behind Portland’s CASCADA thermal springs is building a 68-room hotel in downtown Bend with a thermal spa: hot and cold circuits, silent spaces and rooftop soaking. In Portland, a three-hour thermal visit starts around $100. They say pricing and programming are meant for locals, not just hotel guests.

A word on prepaid memberships

Bend’s Massage Envy closed suddenly in March 2020, and members who had prepaid or kept paying monthly were left trying to get money back. Memberships can be a good deal. Just buy from a studio you trust, use your sessions, and read the cancellation terms.
