Cold plunge

Plunging in the Deschutes

The river is Bend's biggest cold plunge. Bend Park and Recreation warns that water around 50°F can quickly lead to hypothermia, even on warm days. Here is how locals do it.

  • Go with a group, never aloneCold shock can make you gasp involuntarily for the first minute. Have someone on shore.
  • Respect the currentThe Deschutes moves faster than it looks. Stay in calm, shallow water you can stand in, and skip the whitewater park.
  • Wear a PFD if you go beyond knee-deepTumalo Creek's rental manager calls a well-fitting PFD "probably the most important thing" for cold water.
  • Short and sweetMany protocols use 30 seconds to 3 minutes of cold. Get out when your hands go numb.
  • Easiest way inGather's riverside sauna at Riverbend Park (Oct to May) uses the river as the plunge, with guides on site.
  • Prefer a tub?ChillWell, SWTHZ, Flux (down to 45°F), 541 Social, Redefined in Redmond, and Code 541 and Mountain West CrossFit all have cold plunges.

Buying online or a portable sauna

A cedar barrel sauna in a gardenNorthwest SaunaHand-made from Pacific Northwest cedar. Barrel saunas from $5,999 and cold plunges from $4,200, with setup and financing offered.A mobile cedar sauna by a lakeSaltSaun.NWRedmond-built mobile saunas you can buy outright, not just rent.
Portable tents and pop-upsFabric sauna tents with small wood stoves and plug-in infrared blankets cost far less than a cabin. They are good for trying sauna at home, but expect less heat, less durability and more setup. Mobile rentals from SaltSaun.NW or Spindrift are a middle ground.
1Indoor or outdoor

Outdoor barrels and cabins shed Central Oregon snow and keep heat and humidity out of the house. Indoor conversions (a closet, basement or garage corner) need a vapor barrier and venting.

2Electric needs a real circuit

Most home sauna heaters need a dedicated 240-volt circuit. Hire a licensed electrician; electrical work usually needs a permit.

3Wood-fired needs clearances

Follow the stove maker's clearances, use a spark arrestor, and keep the area around it clear. Watch fire season restrictions before lighting an outdoor fire.

4Use real sauna stones

Buy stones made for sauna heaters. River rock and random basalt can crack or burst when heated and doused.

5Check your HOA

Sunriver, Black Butte and many Bend neighborhoods have design rules for outbuildings. Get approval before you order.

6Plan the cold side

A plunge, an outdoor shower or a snowbank all work. Budget space for a bench to cool down and rest.

Materials

What wood should a sauna be made of?

Including the woods that grow around Central Oregon, and where they belong.

Great choice

Western red cedar

Walls, ceilings, benches, exteriors

The Pacific Northwest standard. Aromatic, light, stays relatively cool to the touch, and resists rot outdoors. Most local builders use it.

Great choice

Alaskan yellow cedar

Benches and interiors

Paler and harder than red cedar with a milder scent. A favorite for benches.

Great choice

Aspen and thermo-aspen

Benches and backrests

Low scent and few splinters. Good if anyone in the house is sensitive to cedar aroma.

Budget option

Hemlock and spruce

Budget walls

Clean-looking and affordable. Pick clear, knot-free boards to avoid hot spots and sap.

Local, use outside

Western juniper (local)

Exterior siding, decks, plunge surrounds, posts

Grown right here in Central Oregon and naturally rot-resistant. Removing invasive juniper helps rangelands, and Oregon mills sell it. It is dense and knotty, so most builders use it outside the hot room.

Avoid inside

Ponderosa pine (local)

Outside only

Our local pine is beautiful but resinous. Pitch can bleed out of hot boards inside a sauna.

Avoid inside

Pressure-treated or painted wood

Never inside

Chemicals and coatings off-gas when heated. Keep them out of the hot room entirely.

A wood-burning sauna stove with a stone basket
Rocks matter too. Use stones sold for sauna heaters. Basalt from a Bend yard or rocks from the river can crack or burst when heated and splashed. Photo: Riisipuuro, CC BY-SA 3.0

Sauna etiquette, Bend style

  • Shower before you go in, and sit on a towel.
  • Ask before adding water to the rocks in a shared sauna.
  • Keep voices low; phones stay in the locker.
  • Check each place's dress code. Most shared and community saunas here ask for swimsuits.
  • Drink water, skip alcohol, and leave when you have had enough.

Questions

Sauna FAQ

What is the cheapest sauna in Bend?

A $10 drop-in at Juniper Swim & Fitness or Larkspur Community Center gets you a dry sauna, a steam room and more. Xcel Fitness sells a $15 day pass, and Flux Thermal Lounge first visits start at $20.

Where can I do sauna and cold plunge in Bend?

ChillWell, SWTHZ, 541 Social Club, Gather Sauna House (with the Deschutes as the plunge), Flux Thermal Lounge (hot and cold pools), and Redefined Wellness Collective in Redmond. Code 541 and Mountain West CrossFit have both for members.

Is there a wood-fired sauna in Bend?

Yes. Gather Sauna House runs wood-fired saunas at Riverbend Park from October to May and year-round at the Hanai Sauna Garden on the east side. Woodland Sauna in La Pine runs a wood-burning Russian banya, and mobile saunas from SaltSaun.NW and Spindrift can come to you.

Infrared or traditional sauna: which is better?

Neither is better; they feel different. Traditional saunas heat the air to roughly 160 to 210°F for short, intense rounds. Infrared runs about 120 to 150°F and warms you more directly, so sessions are longer and gentler. Try one of each.

How much does a backyard sauna cost in Central Oregon?

Ember Saunas in Bend lists cedar barrel saunas from $7,300 for a 6-foot model up to $15,300 for a 12-foot with a changing room. Online, Northwest Sauna lists barrels from $5,999. Add delivery, site prep and, for electric heaters, a licensed electrician.

Is it safe to cold plunge in the Deschutes River?

It can be done carefully. Go with others, stay in calm shallow water, wear a PFD if you go deeper, and keep it short. Bend Park and Recreation warns that water around 50°F can quickly lead to hypothermia. The easiest guided option is Gather's riverside sauna at Riverbend Park.

Are there saunas in Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver or La Pine?

Yes. Redmond has Redefined Wellness Collective, plus Redmond Spa, Stove & Sauna for buying one. Sisters has PeakMD Health's infrared sauna and Shibui Spa's Swedish dry sauna. Sunriver Resort's spa offers an infrared sauna experience. La Pine has Woodland Sauna's Russian banya.

Who should not use a sauna?

Several local studios say saunas are not recommended during pregnancy. If you have a heart condition, low blood pressure or another medical concern, ask your doctor first. Skip alcohol and drink water before and after.
