The best time for a retreat, by season

Bend sits at about 3,600 feet in the dry rain shadow of the Cascades. Days are often sunny and nights get cold: even in July the average low is under 50°F, about 35 degrees below the afternoon high.

Average daily high and low in Bend, °F. NOAA 1991–2020 normals.
  1. Late spring (May–June)Green desert, wildflowers, long days. Green Rock’s season opens in May. Nights can still freeze in May, so pack warm layers.
  2. Summer (July–August)Hot afternoons, river and lake days, cool nights. Wildfire smoke can roll in; check Oregon Smoke and ask how a retreat handles bad-air days.
  3. Early fall (September–October)Many people’s favorite: warm days, crisp nights, aspen and meadow color. Green Rock’s retreats wrap up in October.
  4. Winter (November–April)Quiet and snowy. Spa-and-snowshoe retreats (FivePine’s package runs Dec 13–Apr 17), Sunriver’s forest-bathing snowshoe, and fireside resort stays. Check pass conditions on TripCheck.

Soak or infrared sauna (30 min)Sunriver Oasis Room$50–$70

What moves the price

  • Room type. A shared room on Inner Glow is $950; a private king with its own bath is $2,049. Green Rock’s tents price by single, double or triple.
  • What’s bundled. Hosted retreats usually include lodging, meals and sessions. Resort packages often exclude tax and spa gratuity (FivePine), and packages of three or more treatments can add a 20% gratuity (Black Butte).
  • Days of the week. FivePine’s package is $999 Sunday–Thursday and $1,299 on weekends.
  • Booking early. Green Rock’s 2027 example saves $50–$820 before Dec 31, 2026.
  • Getting here. Flights to Redmond (RDM), a rental car and meals on travel days are rarely included.

How to choose a retreat

  1. Name the goal. Rest and sleep, a deeper yoga practice, grief or burnout support, time with your mom, a team reset? Facilitated retreats at Green Rock have very specific themes. Read past the photos.
  2. Pick structure vs. freedom. A hosted retreat sets the day for you. A resort stay lets you choose every hour. Many people do better with a schedule.
  3. Check the facilitator, not just the venue. At Green Rock each retreat is run by a different outside teacher who sets the program and price. Look up their training, past retreats and reviews.
  4. Match comfort to the land. Off-grid canyon tents with outdoor showers and morning-only heat are a different trip from a lodge suite with a soaking tub.
  5. Mind the season. Outdoor retreats run May–October; winter is for spas, snowshoes and fires.
  6. Read the cancellation terms. Deposits can be nonrefundable (Green Rock’s 2027 example: $500), and spas charge for late cancels.

What to pack for a Central Oregon retreat

Every season

  • Layers: a warm fleece or puffy even in July
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for high, dry sun
  • Refillable water bottle and lip balm; the air is dry
  • Comfortable shoes for trails and lava rock
  • Journal, any medications, earplugs

Off-grid and canyon retreats

  • Headlamp for unlit paths after dark
  • Warm sleep layers and a beanie for cold nights
  • Flip-flops for outdoor showers
  • A cooler-weather layer for stargazing
  • Expect patchy or no cell service and no Wi-Fi

Winter and spa stays

  • Warm, waterproof boots (FivePine asks for them with snowshoe rentals)
  • Swimsuit for hot tubs, pools and thermal tubs
  • Traction devices for icy paths
  • Chains or traction tires if you’re driving the passes

Yoga mat? Green Rock’s yoga barn is stocked with Manduka mats and meditation gear, and FivePine’s winter package includes two mats to keep. Ask the host before packing a mat on a flight.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit

The program

  • What does a typical day look like, and how much is optional?
  • Who leads it, what training do they have, and how many retreats have they run?
  • How many people come, and what’s the age or experience range?

Lodging and food

  • Private or shared room? Private or shared bathroom? Is it heated?
  • Which meals are included, and can you handle my dietary needs?
  • Is alcohol allowed or served?

Money and policies

  • What’s included and what costs extra (tax, gratuity, excursions, transfers)?
  • How much is the deposit, when is the balance due, and what’s refundable?
  • What happens if wildfire smoke, snow or a road closure hits?

Health and safety

  • How do you adapt practices for injuries, pregnancy or limited mobility?
  • Are breathwork or cold-plunge sessions part of it, and are they screened?
  • How far is the nearest hospital, and is there cell service?

Frequently asked questions

Are there wellness retreats in Bend itself?

Not many with lodging inside city limits. The dedicated retreat center, Green Rock, is 30 miles north near Smith Rock; hosted yoga retreats tend to use rentals around Sunriver; and the wellness resorts sit outside town (Juniper Preserve, Brasada, Sunriver, FivePine in Sisters, Black Butte Ranch). In Bend you can do a day retreat: a guided forest-bathing session, a yoga class and a sauna or massage.

How much does a wellness retreat near Bend cost?

From the prices posted when we checked: about $950 for a shared room on a 5-day hosted women’s retreat, $1,849–$2,349 for a private room on the same retreat, $1,949 for a single tent on a 3-night Green Rock retreat, and $999–$1,299 for FivePine’s 2-night winter spa package for two. A single resort massage runs $179–$210. Ask whether meals, gratuity, tax and travel are included.

What is the best time of year for a retreat in Central Oregon?

Late May through June and September are the sweet spots: warm afternoons, cool nights and green or golden high desert. July and August bring the most heat (average highs near 84°F in Bend) and the chance of wildfire smoke. Winter is quiet and good for spa-and-snowshoe retreats, but outdoor retreat centers like Green Rock run group retreats only May–October.

Do I need yoga or meditation experience?

No. Inner Glow says no yoga experience is needed, and Green Rock retreats such as Strong Roots make every activity optional. If you have an injury or limited mobility, ask the facilitator how they adapt practices before you pay a deposit.

Can I go on a retreat alone?

Yes. Most hosted retreats are built for people who come solo. Inner Glow caps the group at seven. On the Awakening Wildness retreat at Green Rock, shared tents are booked with friends, and there’s a waitlist if you’re open to sharing with a stranger. For a retreat with no group at all, book a stay at FivePine, Sunriver, Juniper Preserve or SCP Redmond and add spa or wellbeing sessions.

Are alcohol-free retreats available?

Green Rock Retreat is an alcohol-free property, so every retreat held there is sober. Resort retreats are not; Brasada’s 2026 wellness weekend included a wine-pairing dinner.

Can a group or company host its own retreat here?

Yes. Green Rock gives the whole property to one group of 10–30 from May to October. Juniper Preserve builds custom retreats with its wellness specialists, and Black Butte Ranch and Sunriver have group teams. For a self-run retreat, House on Metolius and Lake Creek Lodge in Camp Sherman, Suttle Lake Camp and the Ochoco Christian Conference Center rent space.

What’s the closest airport?

Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM). Green Rock is north of Redmond near Culver, SCP Redmond is downtown, and Sunriver is the farthest at the south end of the region. Most retreats don’t include transfers, so ask, or plan a rental car.

Are there legal psilocybin retreats near Bend?

Oregon licenses psilocybin service centers under state law (ORS 475A), and the program is run by the Oregon Health Authority, now within its Medical Cannabis & Psilocybin Section. This guide doesn’t list them. If you’re considering it, use the OHA licensee directory to confirm a center’s license, and talk with your doctor about medications and health conditions first.

Can I bring my dog?
