Quick take

In Bend, whitening is something your dentist does, usually two ways.

Every office below offers professional whitening, and almost all offer both a one-visit in-office treatment and custom trays you wear at home. Prices are rarely posted, so call for a quote and ask if a recent exam is required.

  • Fastest: Contemporary Family Dentistry says its in-office treatment can lift teeth up to three shades in about 20 minutes; Stillwater’s takes about an hour.
  • Only posted prices: Skyline Dental listed in-office whitening at about $125 and custom trays at about $250 with the first month of gel (April 2023 blog; confirm today’s price).
  • Sensitive teeth: Contemporary offers a sensitive-teeth option; trays let you control how often you whiten.
  • All dentists named here hold Oregon dental licenses listed in the federal NPI registry.

Teeth whitening methods: which fits you?

Pick the option you are leaning toward.

In-office (chairside) whitening

A dentist protects your gums and applies a strong hydrogen peroxide gel, sometimes with a light. Results show the same day. Best before an event. Expect more sensitivity for a day or two than with trays.

In Bend: Contemporary (about 20 minutes), Stillwater (about an hour), Skyline, Drew, Cascadia, Bend Family Dentistry and Aspen Dental.

What teeth whitening costs in Bend

Only Skyline Dental has published whitening prices (April 2023). Everyone else quotes after a visit, so call for current pricing. Dental insurance usually treats whitening as cosmetic.

What moves the price

  • Exam and cleaning firstMany offices want a recent exam; a cleaning removes surface stain and can change how much whitening you need.
  • MethodIn-office costs more per visit; trays cost less over time because you reuse them.
  • Touch-upsExtra gel syringes are cheap compared with repeating in-office sessions.
  • Matching dental workIf you have front crowns or veneers, whitening first and then replacing them to match adds cost.

Safety notes

  • Sensitivity is the most common side effect and is usually mild and temporary, according to the ADA. Higher concentrations raise the risk.
  • Gum irritation often comes from gel leaking out of poorly fitting trays; custom trays help.
  • Only natural teeth whiten. Crowns, fillings, bonding and implants keep their color and may not match afterward.
  • Fix problems first. Cavities, cracked teeth, exposed roots or gum disease should be treated before whitening.
  • Pregnancy: many dentists suggest waiting; ask yours.
  • Who can whiten: in a dental office, whitening is done or supervised by a licensed dentist. Kiosks and salons generally sell products you apply yourself; ask who is responsible if something goes wrong.

Questions to ask your dentist

  1. Do I need an exam or cleaning first, and is that included?
  2. Which whitening product do you use, and what strength?
  3. In-office, trays or both: which do you recommend for my teeth, and why?
  4. How many shades lighter is realistic for me?
  5. What is the total price, including trays, gel and follow-up?
  6. How do you handle sensitivity?
  7. Will my crowns, fillings or bonding match afterward?
  8. How much do refill gel and touch-ups cost?

Teeth whitening in Bend: common questions

How much does teeth whitening cost in Bend?

Most Bend offices quote after a visit. Skyline Dental is the only one that has published prices: about $125 for in-office whitening and about $250 for custom trays with the first month of gel, in an April 2023 post. Call for current prices.

Is in-office whitening better than trays?

In-office is faster, with results in one visit. Custom trays take one to two weeks but are often gentler and let you touch up later. Many people end up at a similar shade either way.

Does dental insurance cover whitening?

Usually not. Whitening is considered cosmetic; Stillwater Dental Bend notes that most dental insurance does not cover it. Some offices offer savings plans or financing.

Will whitening work on crowns or veneers?

No. Only natural teeth whiten, so existing crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings keep their color and may not match your whitened teeth.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Dentist-supervised whitening is considered safe for most people. The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity. The ADA recommends seeing a dentist first so cavities or gum problems can be treated beforehand.

How long does whitening last?

Often several months to a couple of years, depending on coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. Keeping your custom trays makes touch-ups easy.
