Diagnose it

Start with the problem you are seeing

The right fix depends on which part of the drainage system is failing. Match the symptom before you pay for new gutters.

Gutters overflowing during rain or snowmelt

Usually debris, a clogged downspout, too little slope or too few outlets for the roof area. Start with a cleaning and a hose flow test before assuming the whole system needs replacing.

Water running behind the gutter

Points to the roof edge: drip edge, flashing, fascia or how the gutter is hung. If water gets behind rather than spilling over the front, have a roofer look as well.

Gutters sagging or pulling away

Heavy debris, snow and ice, wide hanger spacing, rotten fascia or weak fasteners. Ask why the section moved before it is simply screwed back up.

Water dumping next to the foundation

The gutter may be fine and the downspout outlet is the problem. Extensions, splash blocks, solid drain pipe or a catch basin can carry water to a better spot.

Icicles and ice at the roof edge

A bigger gutter rarely fixes this. Ice dams start with heat escaping the attic and melting roof snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. Heat cable can help trouble spots, but only as part of a diagnosis.

Pine needles, ice dams and snow: Bend gutter basics

Bend gutters handle ponderosa needles, wildfire embers, snow loads and freeze-thaw cycles, not just rain.

Gutter cleaning in Bend

Ponderosa needles bridge outlets, pack into elbows and build up under some screens. Skip a fixed "twice a year" rule: homes under pines may need a check during heavy needle drop, open lots much less. Make sure downspouts are cleared and flow-tested, too.

Gutter guards and pine needles

No guard is maintenance-free. Fine metal micro-mesh keeps needles out best; needles then sit on top and blow off when dry. Ask how the guard is removed for cleaning, whether it lifts shingles or affects the roof warranty, and how it handles snow.

Needles are wildfire fuel

Dry needles in a gutter catch embers. Project Wildfire's FireFree program takes pine needles, cones and brush free at Deschutes County sites during its annual spring event. Metal screens beat plastic; plastic can melt or burn.

Ice dams start in the attic

Warm attic air melts roof snow, which refreezes at the cold eaves and backs water under shingles. Air sealing and insulation fix the cause. Scott's Roofing in Bend puts six feet of ice shield at eaves and three feet in valleys on its roofs.

Heat cable: where it helps

Heat cable keeps a channel open in problem gutters, valleys and downspouts. Ask for an automatic controller, ground-fault protection and the wattage. A new hard-wired circuit is electrical work for a licensed electrician with a permit. Some Bend roofers advise against it.

Snow loads pull gutters down

The City of Bend says permitted buildings are designed for at least 20 to 25 pounds per square foot of roof snow, and estimates 1.25 pounds per square foot for each inch of snow, plus 5.2 pounds for each inch of ice. Sliding snow can rip gutters off; snow-rated hangers help.

Snow load figures: City of Bend, "Roof load and structural integrity." The city does not advise when to remove roof snow and warns about falls; hire a pro or consult an engineer.

Gutter systems

What to know before you buy new gutters

Seamless gutters: what that actually means

Seamless gutters are formed on site to the length of each roof run, so straight runs have no joints. Corners, end caps and outlets still have seams. Ask about profile, metal thickness, hanger type and spacing, and whether fascia needs repair first.

5-inch vs. 6-inch gutters

Both are common. Six-inch gutters carry more water and suit big roofs, steep pitches, long runs, valleys and metal roofs. A good installer explains the size from roof area, slope, valleys, outlets and snow, not looks.

Downspouts and drainage are half the system

Walk the house in a storm or a hose test and look for:

  • Ponding near the foundation
  • Water crossing walkways and freezing
  • Erosion in beds; water toward crawlspace vents
  • Underground drains that back up

Gutters, roofing, flashing and fascia

Rotten fascia, stains behind siding, a damaged drip edge or leaks that continue after cleaning are roof-edge problems. If a reroof is coming, have gutters done with it so new gutters are not pulled off months later.

Gutter chains vs. downspouts

Rain chains look good but splash, and in Bend they build ice. Use them only where splashing and freezing will not land on a walkway, stair or deck, and give them a drained basin.

What to ask for in an installation quote

  • Linear feet, gutter size, profile, material and color
  • Number and size of downspouts and outlets
  • Hanger and fastening system and spacing
  • Removal and haul-away of old gutters
  • Fascia repair, guards, heat cable and drainage, if included
  • Cleanup and warranty

What gutter work costs in Bend

Few Central Oregon gutter companies post prices, so here are national ranges with their dates, plus what local companies do post. Most homes have 150 to 200 feet of gutters.

What Central Oregon companies post

  • Gutters Plus: 20-year craftsmanship warranty; 25% off its Firewise screen system advertised in October 2026; most installs in 1 to 2 days.
  • Fine Line Gutters: fixed, upfront prices and a 5% veteran discount; most installs done in one day.

What moves the price in Bend

  • Height and pitch. Two-story and steep roofs need more ladder time and safety gear, often $1 to $3 more per foot on installs (HomeGuide).
  • Needle load. Homes under ponderosa pines take longer to clean and may need more visits.
  • Corners, valleys and outlets. Complex rooflines need more miters, outlets and downspouts.
  • Fascia repair. Rotten fascia has to be fixed before new gutters can hold snow.
  • Guards and heat cable. Both add per-foot costs; heat cable may also need an electrician.
  • Drainage. Underground downspout lines and catch basins are priced separately.

Gutter installation and repair is construction work in Oregon, so the company needs an active CCB license, bond and insurance. Tap each item as you go.

Questions to ask a Bend gutter contractor

  • Whose name is on the license? Homemasters is licensed as Cald2Design LLC. Match the CCB number and name on your contract.
  • How do you handle pine needles? Ask whether they flush and flow-test downspouts, and which guard they recommend under ponderosas and why.
  • How will it hold snow? Ask about hanger type and spacing, fasteners into solid framing and what happens when snow slides off a metal roof.
  • What causes my ice? Expect a diagnosis that mentions attic insulation and ventilation, not just heat cable or bigger gutters.
  • Where does the water go? Ask where each downspout will discharge and whether buried lines can be cleaned.

Questions

Bend gutter FAQ

How often should Bend gutters be cleaned?

It depends on the trees. Homes under ponderosa pines often need cleaning after the fall needle drop and again in spring, sometimes more. Open lots may need it once a year or less. Fine Line Gutters recommends twice a year as a general rule and stresses winter cleanings of gutters and valleys to help prevent ice dams.

Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning?

No. Guards cut down on cleaning, but needles and roof grit can sit on top or build up over time. Fine stainless micro-mesh handles pine needles best. Ask how the guard is removed or rinsed, and plan an occasional check.

What do gutter guards cost?

HomeGuide puts professionally installed gutter guards at $15 to $45 per linear foot, or about $3,000 to $9,000 for 200 feet (updated Feb. 2026). In Bend, Gutters Plus advertised 25% off its Firewise screen system in October 2026; ask for a written quote.

Does heat cable stop ice dams?

It keeps a melt channel open in problem spots but does not fix the cause. Most ice dams come from attic heat loss melting roof snow. Some Bend roofers, including Scott's Roofing, do not recommend heat tape; Gutters Plus installs automatic heat cable systems. A new hard-wired circuit needs a licensed electrician.

Should I add gutters when I replace my roof?

Coordinating them is smart. New gutters can be hung against new drip edge and fascia, and you avoid removing brand-new gutters for roof work months later. Several Bend roofers, including Northwest Quality Roofing and RCO Roofing, install gutters.

Are bigger gutters always better for snow?

No. Six-inch gutters carry more water, but snow problems are about hangers, fastening into solid framing, roof shape and ice. Size the system from roof area, slope, valleys and downspout capacity.

Why is water still pooling even though I have new gutters?

Gutters collect water; downspouts and drainage deliver it. Check where each downspout ends, whether extensions are missing, whether buried lines are clogged and whether the ground slopes back toward the house.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in Bend?

National figures from HomeGuide (Nov. 2025) are $100 to $250 for a typical home, about $70 to $200 for one story and $100 to $275 for two. Homes under heavy pine cover can take longer. Ask whether downspout flushing is included.

Where can I get rid of pine needles for free?

Project Wildfire's FireFree program accepts pine needles, cones, branches and brush free at Deschutes County sites during its annual spring event. Check projectwildfire.org for this year's dates.
