AI search for Bend businesses

More people now ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI “where should I eat in Bend?” instead of scrolling a list. Here’s how those answers get built, how to test what they say about you, and what actually moves the needle for a local business.

What the data says

Google Maps still wins. AI is catching up.

BrightLocal ran about 200,000 local searches (“best dentist near me” style, no business names) for 60 days across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and published the results in September 2026. How often a tracked local business was mentioned:

Google Maps66%
AI Overviews38%
ChatGPT33%
AI Mode32%
42%of AI citations were business websites. Google Business Profiles were about 28.5%, Yelp about 9.5%.
~50%A business that appears once only shows up again about half the time. Answers change run to run.
29%Google’s AI Mode and AI Overviews name the same businesses less than a third of the time. ChatGPT overlaps even less.

Results also shift with location: the same prompt from different spots in a town returned different businesses. In Bend, a search from NW Crossing and one from the Old Mill can name different places. Test what AI says about your business

Pick your type of business and area. Copy each prompt into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google (AI Mode), and write down who gets named. Repeat monthly.

Business typeArea

Run each prompt three times, in a private window, and note how often you show up. Then ask the follow-up: “What do people say about [your business name]?” Wrong hours, an old address or a closed location in that answer tells you exactly what to fix.

    Where answers come from

What AI tools read about Bend businesses

AI answers are stitched together from sources that already exist. For a Bend business, these are the ones that matter, roughly in order.

Your websiteThe single biggest source in the 2026 data. A page per service that plainly says what you do, where (Bend, Redmond, Sisters…), for whom, and roughly what it costs.
Google Business ProfileCategories, hours, photos, services and reviews. Google’s AI answers lean heavily on Maps listings; keep holiday and seasonal hours current.
Review sitesGoogle reviews first, then Yelp and Tripadvisor for restaurants, lodging and tours. Reviews that mention specific dishes or services give AI something to quote.
Local publicationsThe Source Weekly (and its Best of Central Oregon poll), Bend Bulletin, Bend Magazine and Central Oregon Daily. A real story about you is a strong signal.
Visit Bend & the ChamberVisit Bend listings and events and the Bend Chamber directory are trusted, consistent sources of your name, address and category.
Local guides & forumsIndependent guides (like All Things Bend), community forums and Reddit threads where locals ask “where should I…?” You can’t buy these; you earn them by being good and easy to find.

    Visitors are the big opportunity

Bend is a visitor town, and someone planning a trip from Portland or Seattle doesn’t know your name. They ask an AI “dog-friendly brewery in Bend with food” or “rainy day things to do in Bend.” Pages that answer those exact questions, with your business in them, are how you get named.

    Technical

    Don’t accidentally block AI search

Some website builders and security plugins now block AI crawlers by default. If they’re blocked, you can’t be cited. The ones that matter for being found:

    CrawlerUsed forAllow it?
GooglebotGoogle Search, Maps and AI Overviews / AI ModeYes, always
OAI-SearchBotShowing your site in ChatGPT search answersYes, if you want ChatGPT to cite you

GPTBot · Google-ExtendedAI model training (OpenAI, Google Gemini). Google-Extended doesn’t affect AI Overviews.Your call; blocking doesn’t remove you from search

Check yours by visiting yourdomain.com/robots.txt. A simple, search-friendly file looks like this:

    User-agent: * Allow: / Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

Also claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect (it feeds Apple Maps and Siri). They take an hour, and AI assistants use these listings too.

    Do this

A 90-day AI search plan for a Bend business

Days 1–30: get the facts right

    • Finish your Google Business Profile: the most specific category, every service, 20+ real photos, accurate hours including seasonal changes.
    • Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, and fix your listing on Yelp, Visit Bend and the Chamber so name, address and phone match exactly.
    • Run the prompt tester above and save the answers as your baseline.

    Days 31–60: answer real questions

    • Write one page per service and per town you actually serve. Lead with a plain answer: what, where, who it’s for, typical price range.
    • Add an FAQ section built from what customers actually ask you on the phone, and LocalBusiness plus FAQ schema (any designer in our website design guide can add it).
    • Ask every happy customer for a Google review the same day, with a direct link. Reply to all of them.

    Days 61–90: earn local mentions

    • Pitch a real story to The Source, the Bulletin or Bend Magazine: a milestone, a new chef, a community project.
    • Get into local guides and lists in your category; sponsor a local event or team.
    • Re-run the prompt tester. Track how often you appear across three runs per prompt, not just yes or no.

Most of this is the same work as good local SEO. See our Bend SEO guide for the map pack and review details.

    FAQ

    Questions Bend owners ask

    What is GEO or AEO?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) are names for making your business show up in AI answers: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and voice assistants. For a local business it’s mostly good local SEO done thoroughly, plus making sure the facts about you are clear and consistent everywhere AI tools read.
How do I get my Bend business recommended by ChatGPT?
Give it clear, consistent facts to work with. In BrightLocal’s September 2026 study of 200,000 local AI searches, business websites were 42% of all citations, Google Business Profiles about 28.5% and Yelp about 9.5%. So: a website with a page per service that names Bend, a complete Google profile, steady reviews, and mentions in local publications. Don’t block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt.
Do AI answers replace Google Maps for local searches?
Not yet. In the same study, Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches, versus 38% for AI Overviews, 33% for ChatGPT and 32% for AI Mode. Maps and your Google Business Profile are still the biggest lever, and they feed Google’s AI answers too.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers every time I ask?
AI answers vary run to run and by location. BrightLocal found only 21–33% of businesses repeat between identical runs, and results shift depending on where in town the search comes from. Test the same prompts several times and track how often you appear, not whether you appear once.
Should I add an llms.txt file?
It doesn’t hurt, but none of the major AI search tools has said it uses one for local results. Your time is better spent on service pages, schema, reviews and your Google profile.
Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content?
It can, but it also keeps you out of the answers. OAI-SearchBot is what ChatGPT search uses to show sites; GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler. Google-Extended controls Gemini training but not AI Overviews, which use regular Googlebot. Many local businesses allow the search crawlers and decide separately about training.
How much does AI search optimization cost in Bend?
Bend agencies bundle it into SEO. Posted October 2026 prices: Just By Design $1,250 or $1,950 a month, MDRN SEO $2,500 or $4,000 a month after a $1,500 diagnostic, and Manski Media by consultation. Much of it you can do yourself with the checklist on this page.
Are review incentives OK if they help AI rankings?
No. Google prohibits incentivized reviews, and the FTC’s rule on fake reviews (in effect since October 2024) bans buying them. Ask every happy customer for an honest review with a direct link instead.
    How we checked

Agencies were checked on their own websites in October 2026 for AI search or GEO services; we only list Bend-based firms. National agencies with Bend “location pages” aren’t included. Study figures are from BrightLocal’s September 16, 2026 report on about 200,000 local AI searches across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. Crawler names are from OpenAI, Google and Perplexity documentation.

Updated October 22, 2026. Nobody paid to be listed here. Prices change, so confirm with the business before you sign anything. Suggest a fix or a business we missed.
