The channels

Where the ad money goes

Google Search & Local Services Ads

Best for: people ready to buy now

Plumber, dentist, tow truck, dinner tonight. You pay per click (search) or per lead (Local Services Ads for trades). Highest intent, usually the first dollar to spend.

Meta (Facebook & Instagram)

Best for: events, openings, visitors

Cheap reach and good targeting by town and interest. Strong for restaurants, retail, events and anything visual. Weak for “I need it fixed today.”

Streaming TV & YouTube

Best for: brand awareness

Targeted by zip code on streaming apps. Manski Media and Combined Communications both sell streaming TV in Central Oregon.

Local radio

Best for: trades, dealers, events

Combined Communications (KBND and sister music stations) and Horizon Broadcasting (KQAK, The Peak, The Ranch, KBNW, KRCO) reach drivers and job sites all day.

Print & local media

Best for: locals, special sections

The Source Weekly's guides (Best of Central Oregon, Happy Hour, Restaurant Guide) and its newsletters; local magazines; KTVZ and Central Oregon Daily News on TV and web.

Best for: visitor businesses

Budget planner

Split a monthly ad budget

A starting split by business type, not a promise. Run it for 60 to 90 days, track calls and sales by channel, then move money to what works.

Targeting

Setting up ads for Bend, the right way

Target towns, not a giant radius.

A 30-mile circle around Bend pulls in a lot of empty forest and misses nothing useful. Pick Bend, Redmond, Sisters, Sunriver, La Pine and the zip codes you actually serve.

Use “presence,” not “interest.”

In Google Ads, set location targeting to people in or regularly in your area. The default also shows ads to people merely interested in Bend, which wastes money for most local services.

Flip it for visitors.

Lodging, tours and rentals should do the opposite: target people searching about Bend from the cities your guests drive or fly in from.

Plan around the seasons.

Raise budgets a few weeks before your busy season (snow for ski and auto shops, late spring for river and patio, fall for furnaces and chimneys) and pull back in the lull.

Track every call.

Use call tracking numbers or Google's call reporting. Most Bend service businesses get more calls than form fills, and untracked calls make good ads look bad.

Send ads to a real landing page.

One offer, one service, the towns you cover, real photos and a phone button. Not your homepage.

FAQ

Questions Bend owners ask

How much should a Bend business spend on ads?
There is no single number, but small local service businesses commonly test Google Ads with $500 to $1,500 a month in ad spend, plus any management fee. Start with one channel, track calls and form fills for 60 to 90 days, then add budget to what works.
What does it cost to advertise with Visit Bend?
Visit Bend posts its prices: a free basic event listing, featured events from $250 per event day, and a $250-a-year brochure rack spot in the Bend Visitor Center, which sees more than 20,000 visitors a year. Its marketing team also offers free consultations to local businesses.
Can I put up a new billboard in Bend?
Generally no. Oregon's Motorist Information Act bars new billboards, so the boards along US 97 and US 20 are existing signs that get resold. That limited inventory is why good spots are often booked. Ask a media buyer or the billboard owner what is open.
Is radio advertising worth it in Bend?
Radio still reaches commuters and people working in trucks and shops all day, which suits home services, car dealers, events and retail. Combined Communications (KBND and its music stations) and Horizon Broadcasting (KQAK 105.7, The Peak 104.1, The Ranch 95.7 and others) both sell local packages, often with online ads and events bundled in.
Should I target Portland or Seattle with ads?
If you sell to visitors (lodging, tours, rentals, restaurants), yes: plan trip-planning ads in the cities your guests come from, a few weeks to months before your season. Local service businesses should keep ads tight to the towns they actually serve.
What are Google Local Services Ads?
The “Google Guaranteed” or “Google Screened” ads at the very top of searches for trades and some professional services. You pay per lead instead of per click, and you must pass Google's background and license checks. They are worth testing for plumbers, electricians, HVAC, cleaners and similar Bend businesses.
