The free option

How a free park party works in Bend

  1. Under 30 people? No reservation needed. Bend Park & Recreation lets groups under 30 use any park first come, first served. That costs nothing.
  2. 31 or more? Reserve a shelter. Planned events over 30 people must book one. It is a flat $60, $110 or $175 by group size for in-district residents, and 20% more if you live outside the district.
  3. Book up to six months out. Summer weekends at the shelters near playgrounds go first.
  4. Extras need approval. Alcohol needs district sign-off and insurance. Bounce houses are $40, allowed May through August at certain parks only, and also need insurance.
The 60-second version: For young kids, pick a venue that runs the activity and cleans up. For teens, pick an activity they would do anyway and feed them after. For adults, pick one anchor (a private room, a lawn, an activity) and let everything else stay loose. If money is tight, a Bend park is free for groups under 30.

Party plans that work in Bend

Six ready-made plans built from the venues above. Each one is a single activity, one meal and nothing else to coordinate.

Ages 1 to 5

The short and sweet one

  1. Book a Toddler Time party at Mountain Air (ages 6 and under) or a morning at Free Spirit (ages 1 and up).
  2. Keep it to two hours, which is how long both run.
  3. Bring cake. Both allow it.

Mountain Air's toddler package comes with snack packs, so snacks are covered.

Ages 5 to 10

The burn-it-off party

  1. Choose Trampoline Zone, Mountain Air or the Big Play Thing at Cascade Indoor Sports.
  2. Check the food rule before you order pizza. Trampoline Zone allows dessert only.
  3. Send the waiver link with the invitation.

Cascade Indoor Sports starts at $200 for 15 kids and lets you bring your own food.

Tweens and teens

The not-a-kid-party

  1. Race at K1 Speed (48 inches and up for junior karts) or rent Vector Volcano arcade for an hour.
  2. Skip the party room games. Let them hang out.
  3. Feed them after: pizza is included at K1, or walk to dinner downtown from the arcade.

In winter, an ice skating party at The Pavilion fits this age well too.

Adults, casual

The no-host hangout

  1. Pick a food cart lot: On Tap for lawn games, River's Place when it is cold, Crux for the lawn and sunset.
  2. Tell people a time. Everyone orders their own food and drinks.
  3. Call ahead if the group is large, and ask before bringing a cake.

There is nothing to rent and nothing to clean up.

30th, 40th, 50th

The milestone

  1. Reserve a private room: Anthony's or Greg's Grill on the river, McMenamins downtown, or 10 Barrel East Side for a big crowd.
  2. Ask for the food and drink minimum first. It decides whether the room is right for your headcount.
  3. Add one thing people will remember: a photo booth, a magician or a toast with a slideshow.

Want it at home instead? See private chefs and caterers.

Summer, any age

The park and splash party

  1. Reserve the Alpenglow Park shelter. It sits beside the playground and splash pad.
  2. Bring pizza, a cooler and a pop-up shade for backup.
  3. Plan it for the morning. July afternoons get hot and smoke can roll in.

A shelter for up to 30 people is $60 at the in-district rate.

Bring the party to you

A backyard, a park shelter or a rented hall becomes a real party once someone else brings the fun. Use the Comes to you filter in the finder above for the full list.

  • Bounce houses and games: 541 Bounce, Bouncin Bins, SK Bounce and The Luxury Bounce Co. all deliver in Central Oregon. Themed bounce houses start at $114.
  • For older kids: SK Bounce rents laser tag with bunkers and bubble soccer.
  • Entertainment: a magician or a photo booth.
  • Food: a caterer or food truck, or a private chef for a dinner party.
Combining a bounce house with a park? Reserve the shelter first, confirm that park allows inflatables, then book the rental and ask for the insurance certificate. You will also need a generator, because shelter outlets do not carry enough power.

Outdoor birthdays beyond the parks

Some of the best Bend birthdays do not have a venue at all.

River float or paddle

A summer float through town works for teens and adults, and Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe hosts private parties on its riverside deck and lawn with boats and boards available. Sort out the shuttle, life jackets and a food stop before the day. Our paddling and floating guide covers put-ins, rentals and rules.

Cascade Lakes day

For a small group, a lake picnic and a paddle can beat any party room. Check road status, parking and fire restrictions before you go, and bring more water and shade than you think you need.

Mt. Bachelor day

A winter birthday can simply be a ski or snowboard day with lunch on the mountain. It suits teens and adults who already ride, and it needs no decorations.

Always have an indoor backup. A July party in Bend can need one just as much as a February party. Wildfire smoke, wind and afternoon thunderstorms all show up on short notice. Our rainy and smoky day guide has more ideas.

Adult birthdays: booking a private room

Most Bend breweries and restaurants do not charge a flat room fee. They set a food and drink minimum instead, and the room is yours once your group spends that much. McMenamins states this outright, and 10 Barrel adds a setup fee on top.

Before you commit, get these in writing:

  • The minimum spend for your date, and whether tax and gratuity count toward it
  • How many people the room holds seated versus standing
  • Whether you can bring a cake, and if there is a cutting fee
  • Menu format: buffet, plated, or guests ordering on their own
  • How late the room is yours
  • The patio or lawn weather plan

Planning something bigger than a dinner? The corporate events guide and holiday party venues guide list more large spaces, and the bachelor party guide has group activity ideas that work for birthdays too.

Birthday planning by season

WinterTrampoline parks, bowling, karts and ice skating at The Pavilion. Winter weekends book up, so reserve early.
SpringWeather swings fast. Pick an indoor venue or a covered shelter with a plan B.
SummerParks, the river and brewery lawns. Riverbend Park's shelter cannot be reserved from May 1 through Labor Day.
FallThe sweet spot for park shelters and patios. Roller skating at The Pavilion runs into September.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. What is the all-in price for my headcount?
  2. How many guests are included, and what does each extra cost?
  3. Do adults and siblings count toward the total?
  4. Is the party space private or shared?
  5. Can we bring cake? Other food?
  6. Are decorations allowed? Any banned items?
  7. Is setup and cleanup included?
  8. Are waivers required, and can guests sign online?
  9. Are there age, height or sock rules?
  10. How much is the deposit, and is it refundable?
  11. What happens if we need to reschedule?
  12. Is there enough parking for the group?

Bend birthday party questions

Where can I have a free birthday party in Bend?

Any Bend Park & Recreation park works for groups under 30 on a first come, first served basis, with no fee and no reservation. Alpenglow, Farewell Bend, Discovery and Larkspur parks all have play areas close to the picnic shelters. If you want a guaranteed covered shelter, reserving one starts at $60 for in-district residents.

Do I need to reserve a Bend park for a birthday party?

Only if the group is bigger than 30 or you want to be sure of a shelter. The park district requires planned events with more than 30 people to reserve a shelter. Shelter reservations open six months ahead and cost $60 for up to 30 people, $110 for 31 to 60 and $175 for 61 to 100 at the in-district rate.

Which Bend restaurants have a private dining room for a birthday?

Anthony's at the Old Mill District has an upper-level mezzanine for 45 seated, Greg's Grill has a private banquet room for up to 30, Willamette Valley Vineyards has a private wine room for up to 25 and JIA Asian Street Kitchen has the Moon Room. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 10 Barrel East Side, Worthy Brewing and the UPP Liquids Barrel Room cover brewery-style private rooms.

Can I rent a bounce house for a party in a Bend park?

Yes, with limits. Bend Park & Recreation allows inflatables from May through August at certain parks only, with a paid shelter reservation, a $40 fee and a certificate of insurance due 30 days before the event. 541 Bounce says it can provide that certificate on request. In your own backyard none of that applies.

Which Bend birthday venues include food?

K1 Speed's kids package includes pizza and drinks. Mountain Air lets you add pizza at booking. Sun Mountain Fun Center and Lava Lanes have kitchens on site. For adults, McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 10 Barrel East Side and Worthy Brewing serve food and drinks in their private rooms, and Bend Brewing Co. pairs its lawn rental with a food truck.

Can I bring my own cake or food to a party venue?

It depends on the venue, so ask before you order. Mountain Air, Free Spirit and Cascade Indoor Sports allow outside food. Trampoline Zone allows cake, cupcakes or ice cream only. The Pavilion allows food with a booked party room but does not allow walk-in parties during public skate. Vector Volcano charges a slightly higher rate if you bring food.

Where can adults have a birthday party in Bend?

For a private room with food and drinks, look at McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 10 Barrel East Side, Worthy Brewing or Bend Brewing Co. For an activity, try K1 Speed, axe throwing at Unofficial Logging Co., a Cycle Pub tour or a private night at Vector Volcano arcade. For a low-key gathering with no rental at all, meet at a food cart lot such as On Tap or River's Place.

What is a good indoor birthday venue for winter or a smoky day?

The trampoline parks, Cascade Indoor Sports, K1 Speed, Sun Mountain Fun Center, Lava Lanes, Bend Rock Gym and Vector Volcano are all fully indoors. The Pavilion is covered and runs ice skating parties from November to April. River's Place has heated indoor seating if you want a casual food cart meetup.

How far ahead should I book a birthday party in Bend?

Park shelters can be booked up to six months ahead and the Larkspur event room up to three months ahead. Hollinshead Barn and Aspen Hall take reservations up to 18 months out. Activity venues do not share one rule, but K1 Speed does not take same-day bookings and most places want a deposit to hold a weekend slot. Winter weekends and summer Saturdays fill first.
