Patch it or replace the sheet?
Most damage is a patch. A few situations mean cutting out and hanging new board.
Spackle and paint
Nail holes, dings, hairline cracks
Fill, sand, prime. A good DIY job if the wall is smooth or lightly textured.
Patch
Doorknob and fist-size holes
Mesh patch or a cut-in piece backed by wood, then 2–3 coats of mud, texture and paint. Usually more than one visit for drying.
Re-tape
Cracked or bubbling seams, nail pops
Reset fasteners, cut out loose tape, re-tape and feather. Repeat cracks at door and window corners can mean movement worth checking.
Replace
Soaked, sagging, moldy or crumbling board
Cut back to dry, sound material and to framing, hang new board, tape, texture, paint. Fix the water source first.

Drywall textures and how hard they are to match
Every repair company we checked calls texture matching the hard part. Know what you have before you call; a close-up photo helps a lot.

Knockdown
Splattered mud flattened with a knife into flat, irregular islands. One of the spray textures Empire Drywall lists, with orange peel and pull trowel.
Matching: Matchable with a sprayer or hopper; the knockdown timing and pressure are the art.
Orange peel
A fine spray that looks like the skin of an orange. Easy to clean and quietly hides small flaws.
Matching: Sprayed in light passes; feathered over the patch until it blends.

Popcorn (acoustic)
Cottage-cheese ceilings sprayed for sound and to hide flaws. Common in older homes.
Matching: Can be patched with canned or sprayed acoustic texture, but many owners remove it instead.
Hand textures
Skip trowel, Santa Fe, swirl and other troweled looks done by hand.
Matching: The hardest to match; ask for photos of past matches.
Smooth (Level 5)
A full skim coat over the whole surface for a flat, paint-ready finish.
Matching: Patches show under raking light, so sand and prime carefully, or skim the whole wall.
Who lists texture work: Mike’s (hand texture, custom matching, smooth wall), Fast Patch (hand textures, Venetian plaster), Empire (knockdown, orange peel, pull trowel and hand textures), Bend Drywall & Paint (re-texture and skim coats), Double D (skim coat) and Magic Drywall. For true plaster, WhiteStar.
What Central Oregon does to walls and ceilings
Dry air, fast mud
Bend’s high-desert air dries joint compound faster than in wetter climates. Pros use quick-set mud on purpose (Fast Patch says it finishes most work quickly with it); DIYers should work in thin coats so patches don’t shrink and crack.
Frozen pipes and ice dams
Winter leaks show up as ceiling stains. Get the leak fixed first: see our frozen pipe guide. Then replace wet board rather than painting over it.
Smoke
Smoke damage, including from house fires, often means cleaning or replacing drywall and repainting. Bend Drywall & Paint lists smoke repairs with its water-damage restoration work.
Nail pops and seam cracks
Framing moves as it dries and as seasons change, so newer homes often show screw pops and hairline seam cracks in the first years. Batch them into one visit.
Attached garages
The wall and ceiling between an attached garage and the house are fire separations in the residential code (gypsum board on the garage side, and 5/8-inch Type X under rooms above). Replace them in kind, and don’t leave holes.
Older houses
Bend’s pre-2004 homes trigger Oregon’s asbestos survey rule for hired renovation work, and pre-1978 homes bring lead-safe rules. More below.
Water-damaged drywall: the order of operations
Stop the water. Shut off the supply or the leak source; call a plumber or roofer.
Make it safe. Turn off power to wet light fixtures and stay out from under a sagging ceiling.
Dry and check. For big leaks, a restoration company extracts water, dries the framing and checks moisture. Central Oregon Disaster Restoration lists 24-hour response in Bend.
Call your insurer early if it’s a sudden leak, and take photos before anything is cut out.

Popcorn ceilings, asbestos and lead paint
Asbestos (homes built before 2004)
Oregon DEQ requires an asbestos survey by an accredited inspector before renovation of residential buildings built before Jan. 1, 2004, when you hire the work out. Otherwise all materials must be treated as asbestos.
Owner-occupants renovating their own single-family home are exempt, but DEQ still recommends testing.
Only DEQ-licensed abatement contractors may remove friable asbestos.
Popcorn removal options: scrape and re-texture (the usual), skim-coat to smooth, or cover with new board. Ugly Walls, Magic Drywall and Double D list popcorn ceiling work.
What drives the price
No Bend drywall company we checked posts a price list, so expect a quote after a look. These are the things that move it.
Trips, not square feet. Mud needs coats and drying time, so a small patch can still mean two or three visits. Batch every hole in the house into one job.
Texture. Smooth and orange peel are quicker to blend than hand textures or a Level 5 smooth wall.
Paint after. A patch rarely disappears without repainting the whole wall or ceiling. Drywall-and-paint crews quote it together.
Ceilings and height. Overhead work, vaulted ceilings and staircases take longer.
Water damage. Drying, moisture checks and mold work come before drywall.
Older homes. Asbestos surveys and lead-safe practices add cost and time.
Discounts. Magic Drywall offers senior, military, veteran and new-customer discounts; Ugly Walls advertises set fees.
Get a written estimate that says whether texture and paint are included.
Ask for photos of past texture matches like yours.
For pre-1978 homes, ask about the lead-based paint renovation license.

DIY: patching a small hole
Cut it clean. Square up the hole; check for wires and pipes before cutting.
Back it. A self-adhesive mesh patch for small holes; for bigger ones, screw wood backing inside and cut in a piece of matching board (usually 1/2 inch).
Tape and mud. Thin coats, feathered wider each time. Let each dry; Bend’s dry air speeds that up but thick coats still crack.
Sand and prime. Light sanding, then primer so the patch doesn’t flash through paint.
Texture and paint. Canned texture works for orange peel and knockdown on small spots; paint the whole wall for an even sheen.

Frequently asked questions
How much does drywall repair cost in Bend?
None of the Bend-area drywall companies we checked post prices; most quote after a free look. What moves the price: how many trips (patching takes coats of mud with drying time between), texture type, whether it needs paint after, ceiling vs wall, and any water-damage drying or testing first. Ugly Walls says it uses set fees, and Magic Drywall offers discounts for seniors, military, veterans and new customers.
Do I need a licensed contractor for drywall repair in Oregon?
Almost always. Oregon generally requires anyone paid to do construction work on a home, drywall and handyman work included, to hold a Construction Contractors Board license; a narrow exemption covers small, casual jobs by people who don’t advertise. Look up the CCB number before you hire; every company in this guide with a number was active when we checked.
Does popcorn ceiling removal need an asbestos test?
For homes built before 2004, Oregon DEQ requires an asbestos survey by an accredited inspector before renovation when you hire someone to do the work, or all materials must be treated as asbestos. Owner-occupants doing their own work in a single-family home are exempt but DEQ still recommends testing. Only DEQ-licensed abatement contractors may remove friable asbestos.
Is drywall work in an older home a lead-paint issue?
It can be. In homes built before 1978, paid work that disturbs painted surfaces falls under the EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, and in Oregon the firm needs a CCB Lead-Based Paint Renovation license. Ask your contractor whether they hold it.
Do I need a permit to repair drywall in Bend?
Patching and replacing drywall is usually treated as finish work. Opening walls to move framing, wiring or plumbing, or replacing the fire-rated wall or ceiling between an attached garage and the house, is different: check with City of Bend Building Safety (or Deschutes County outside city limits) before you start.
What should I do first after a leak stains the ceiling?
Stop the water, shut off power to any wet light fixtures, and get it dry. Drywall that stayed wet or sagged usually gets cut out and replaced, not painted over. For bigger leaks, a water-damage restoration company dries and tests for moisture first; then a drywall crew patches, textures and paints. Bend Drywall & Paint, Magic Drywall and Empire Drywall all list water-damage work.
Why do Bend walls get nail pops and seam cracks?
Framing lumber moves as it dries and as seasons change, which can push drywall screws and nails out or crack tape joints, especially in newer houses and in Central Oregon’s dry winter air under constant heating. Small pops and hairline cracks are cosmetic; long diagonal cracks from door and window corners, or doors that stop closing, are worth a look from a contractor or inspector.
Can I patch drywall myself?
Small holes, yes: a self-adhesive mesh patch or a cut-in piece, two or three thin coats of joint compound, sanding and primer. Bend’s dry air speeds drying, so feather thin coats. Texture matching, ceilings, big holes and anything water-damaged are where pros earn their fee, and Ugly Walls says it will finish DIY jobs that need help.
