Step 1

Handyman job, or call a pro?

24 jobs Bend homeowners ask about most. Search yours, or filter by who should do it.

  • Handyman job Patch drywall holes

Classic handyman work. Ask for texture matching; Bend homes often have knockdown or orange peel.

  • Handyman job Mount a TV (existing outlet)

Fine for a handyman. Ask that it be anchored into studs.

  • Licensed trade Add an outlet behind the TV

New wiring is electrical work. Call a licensed electrician.

  • Handyman job Assemble furniture or a playset

Quick, cheap handyman work. Bundle it with other small tasks.

  • Handyman job Adjust sticking doors

Dry winters and freeze-thaw shift doors here. A handyman can plane, shim and adjust.

  • Handyman job Replace deck boards

Good handyman job. If joists or posts are rotted, get a deck builder.

  • General contractor Rebuild a whole deck

Structural and often permitted work. Hire a licensed contractor.

  • Handyman job Clean gutters and pine needles

Worth doing every fall in Bend. Needles in gutters are a wildfire ember risk.

  • Handyman job Install grab bars

Handyman work if anchored into blocking or studs. Ask what they anchor into.

  • Licensed trade Swap a light fixture or ceiling fan

In Oregon this is electrical work. Use a licensed electrician.

  • Licensed trade Replace a water heater

Needs a licensed plumber and usually a permit.

  • Depends, ask first Fix a leaky faucet

Minor repairs are often fine. Replacing piping or moving fixtures is plumber work. Ask.

  • Handyman job Caulk tubs, sinks and windows

Cheap, fast and prevents water damage.

  • Handyman job Weatherstrip doors

Big comfort win before winter. Pair with a door sweep.

  • Handyman job Rekey locks after moving in

Some handymen rekey (Bend Handyman Service lists it), or call a locksmith.

  • Licensed trade Fix a broken garage door spring

Springs are under dangerous tension. Call a garage door company.

  • Licensed trade Repair a roof leak

Call a roofer. A handyman can clean gutters but should not do roofing.

  • General contractor Move or remove a wall

Structural and permitted. Hire a general contractor.

  • Handyman job Paint a room or touch up trim

Good handyman work. For a whole house, compare with painters.

  • Handyman job Fence repair (a few boards or a gate)

Handyman-sized. A new fence line is a fence company job.

  • Depends, ask first Replace a toilet

Many handymen do straight swaps. Moving the drain is plumber work. Ask before booking.

  • Handyman job Hang pictures, mirrors and shelves

Exactly what to add to a handyman visit.

  • Handyman job Install a pet door

Doors are easy. Walls and glass take more skill; ask first.

  • Licensed trade Clean up after a burst pipe

Call a plumber, then a water restoration company. Act fast to stop mold.

      A plan makes sense when

      • You always have a list, every month.
      • You own a rental or vacation home and live elsewhere.
      • You forget filters, smoke alarm batteries and dryer vents.
      • You want priority booking in the busy fall and spring rush.

      Skip it when

      • You need help once or twice a year.
      • Your list is one big project, not many small ones.
      • Unused hours expire. Ask whether they roll over before you sign.

      The small stuff

More jobs Bend homeowners hire out

      Overhead ceiling racks

Racks must be lagged into ceiling joists, not drywall. Leave clearance for the garage door and opener.

A custom garage wall system with cabinets and hanging storage

      Who to callHandyman

A classic Bend request. Anchor into studs and hang bikes by the wheel to save floor space.

      The rules

      Oregon's handyman license rule

"Handyman" is not a license type, and the exemption is much narrower than most people think.

Under $1,000total for the project, labor and materials
Casual or minor"casual, minor or inconsequential" work
No advertisingno sign, card, ad or website
ExemptMiss any one and a CCB license is required

Source: ORS 701.010(4). The exemption "does not apply to a person who advertises or puts out any sign or card or other device that might indicate to the public that the person is a contractor."

Check a license in four clicks

      1. Open the CCB contractor search.
      2. Type the business name or CCB number.
      3. Confirm the status says Active and the name matches.
      4. Check that the bond and insurance are current and look at complaint history.

      Separate licenses for these trades

      • Electrical: new circuits, outlets, fixtures and fans need a licensed electrician.
      • Plumbing: water heaters, new lines and moved fixtures need a licensed plumber.
      • Structural: walls, beams and full deck rebuilds need a contractor and often a permit.

      Older Bend homes

The historic Putnam House in Bend, Oregon

Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint. Sanding or scraping painted surfaces needs a contractor certified for lead-safe work. Ask before they start.

      Year round

      Bend home maintenance checklist

High desert homes deal with hard freezes, heavy snow, pine needles and smoke season. Tick items off; your list stays on this device.

      Before they show up

      How to hire well

      1. What is your CCB number, and is the license under the company name on my invoice?
      2. Do you bill hourly, by the job, or both? Is there a minimum or trip charge?
      3. Do you bill for travel and supply runs?
      4. Who buys materials, and is there a markup?
      5. Which items on my list should go to an electrician, plumber or roofer?
      6. When could you start, and how long will my list take?

      Red flags

      • No CCB number, or a number registered to a different name.
      • Offers to do electrical, plumbing or gas work "to save you the electrician."
      • Wants full payment before starting a small job.
      • A "Bend handyman" website with an out-of-state phone number or a note that it is a referral service. You do not know who will show up.
      • Pressure to decide today.

      Questions

      Handyman FAQ

Do handymen need a license in Oregon?

Almost always. Oregon law only exempts work under $1,000 per project that is casual, minor or inconsequential, and the exemption does not apply to anyone who advertises as a contractor. So any handyman with a website, sign, truck lettering or ad needs a Construction Contractors Board license. Check it free on the CCB search.

Can a handyman do electrical or plumbing work in Oregon?

Only very limited work. Swapping light fixtures, adding outlets, replacing water heaters and moving plumbing are licensed electrical or plumbing work. Hire an electrician or plumber for those, and use the handyman for everything else.

      How do Bend handymen charge?

Most bill by the hour with a minimum visit charge, and some bill travel time and supply runs. The Maintenance Man, for example, says most of its visits land between $150 and $750. Ask how they bill before they come out, and group small tasks into one visit so you only pay one minimum.

Are handyman memberships worth it in Bend?

They can be if you always have a list. Deschutes Concierge Handyman sells monthly memberships with set hours, and Kaufman's Home Maintenance does quarterly checkups on a 14-point list. If you only need help once or twice a year, booking one-time visits is usually cheaper.

Who installs overhead garage racks in Bend?

Most handymen can, and garage storage companies like Bend Garage Storage, Webfoot Home Improvements and Concept Closets specialize in it. Racks must be lagged into the ceiling joists and kept clear of the garage door track and opener.

How far ahead do I need to book a handyman in Bend?

It varies by season. Fall gets busy with gutters and winter prep, and spring fills up with decks and fences. Book early in those seasons, and ask about after-hours or emergency service if something cannot wait.

Who fixes things at my Bend vacation rental when I am out of town?

Some companies specialize in short-term rentals and offer fast callbacks, emergency response and photo reports, like Basalt Property Services in Bend and Sunriver. Polit & Son also offers 24-hour weekend and emergency service.

Is there free help with home repairs in Central Oregon?

NeighborImpact runs a free home weatherization program for income-qualified households in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties. Call 541-548-2380 to ask about eligibility.
