"Licensed since" is when the current license was first issued, so a company can be older than its license. Always re-check on the CCB license search before you sign.

No companies match both choices. Try "Anywhere in Central Oregon".
No license number shown? Designers who don't build don't need one; for anyone else, ask for it and look it up on the Oregon CCB before you sign. Need help beyond the kitchen? See general contractors.
New to this?
Who should I call for my kitchen?
It depends on how much you want to change. Find the one that sounds like you.
"I like my layout. I just hate how it looks."
Call a cabinet refresh company
They paint, refinish or put new doors on the cabinets you already have. Add new counters and lights and it feels like a new kitchen. Usually no building permit.
"New cabinets, counters and appliances, same spots."
Call a kitchen remodeler
Everything gets replaced but the sink, stove and walls stay where they are. Faster and simpler than moving things around.
Try: Surface Kitchen & Bath, Designer Baths & Kitchens, K2 Design Remodel
"Knock out a wall, add an island, move the sink."
Call a design + build firm
They design the new layout, handle permits and engineering, and build it. One company is responsible start to finish.
Try: Neil Kelly, Sierra James, DCR Northwest
"I want a great plan first, then I'll pick a builder."
Hire a kitchen designer
They draw the layout and choose cabinets and finishes. You can then get bids from several builders on the same plan.

Budget
What does a kitchen remodel cost in Bend?
Two kinds of numbers, both dated: what Bend-area companies post on their own sites (checked October 23, 2026), and the 2025 Cost vs Value report, the newest edition, for Medford, the closest Oregon market it covers.
Prices Bend-area remodelers post
Neil Kelly
| Refresh (reface, counters, paint, lighting) | $55k–$110k+3–5 months |
|---|---|
| Replace (new kitchen, same footprint) | $85k–$205k+5–8 months |
| Reimagine (walls move, layout changes) | $175k–$330k+8–12 months |
Company-wide ranges from its kitchen remodel page; it has a Bend design center.
Rockin’ K GC
| Refresh remodel (reface or paint, counters, fixtures) | from about $50k |
|---|---|
| Mid-range (new kitchen in the existing layout) | $50k–$150k |
| Full custom (layout and structural changes) | $150k+ |

Cost vs Value 2025: Medford, Oregon vs the Pacific region
Midrange minor kitchen remodel
$25,827Medford, OR average
Pacific region $29,728 · U.S. $28,458
200 sq ft kitchen: reface cabinets, new counters, sink, faucet, appliances and flooring, paint. Layout stays.
Recoups about 114.7% at resale in Medford (129.1% Pacific region).
Midrange major kitchen remodel
$75,822Medford, OR average
Pacific region $86,480 · U.S. $82,793
Semi-custom cabinets with an island, new counters, energy-efficient appliances, lighting and flooring.
Recoups about 56.1% at resale in Medford (57.2% Pacific region).
Upscale major kitchen remodel
$150,741Medford, OR average
Pacific region $171,950 · U.S. $164,104
Custom cabinets, stone counters, high-end built-in appliances, tile backsplash and upgraded lighting.
Recoups about 36.1% at resale in Medford (38.8% Pacific region).
- What moves the number most: changing the layout. Moving plumbing, gas and wiring, and opening walls, costs more than replacing in place (Rockin' K and Neil Kelly both call it the biggest lever).
- Cabinet refresh: no Bend refresh company posts a price, so get quotes from two on the same scope.
- Keep 10 to 20% aside for surprises. Older Bend houses can hide rot under the sink, undersized wiring or asbestos in old flooring.
- Permits add cost and time: Bend charges permit fees based on the project's value; your contractor's bid should say whether they are included.
City of Bend
Do you need a permit for a kitchen remodel in Bend?
Finish work doesn't need a building permit in Oregon. Wiring, plumbing, gas, ducting and walls do. Here's what applies to common kitchen jobs inside Bend city limits.
| Kitchen work | Permit |
|---|---|
| Paint, new cabinet doors, refacing, new cabinets in the same spots | No building permit |
| New countertops, tile backsplash, flooring | No building permit |
| Swap a range, dishwasher or sink in place | Usually none; ask if the gas or water lines change |
| New circuits, outlets for an island, under-cabinet lighting | Electrical permit |
| Move the sink or dishwasher, add a pot filler or prep sink | Plumbing permit |
| New gas line, or a range hood ducted outside | Mechanical / plumbing permit |
| Remove or move a wall, add a window, add a beam | Building permit with plans (plus trade permits) |
Based on Oregon's residential code (R105.2), which exempts painting, tiling, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work but notes trade permits may still apply. Some small electrical and plumbing jobs can use a state minor label. When unsure, ask the Permit Center.
Apply online
Inside Bend city limits, permits go through the City’s Online Permit Center (CityView). Your contractor usually applies; homeowners can too.
Plans as PDFs
Bend’s Residential Submittal Checklist (revised Sept. 2, 2026) asks for PDF files under 40 MB, drawn to scale and no smaller than 11x17, with any engineering stamped.
Interior-only is lighter
For a remodel that stays inside the house, the checklist skips the site plan, sidewalk, driveway and stormwater sections.
Asbestos survey
Homes with four or fewer units built before Jan. 1, 2004 need an asbestos survey before a remodel permit that includes demolition, and an abatement report if asbestos turns up (Oregon DEQ rule).
Timing
The City says permits take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the project. It posts a live Permit Center timelines report.
Inspections
Inspections are booked online at stages like framing, electrical, plumbing and final. A permit expires if no inspection is requested for 180 days.
Doing it yourself
Homeowners may do work on their own home, but not on a home that is rented or leased. That work needs a licensed contractor.
Walk-ins welcome
Permit Center at City Hall, 710 NW Wall St. Staff answer questions Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 541-388-5580 or email permitcenter@bendoregon.gov.
Outside Bend city limits? Unincorporated areas like Tumalo, Deschutes River Woods and Sunriver go through Deschutes County. In Redmond, Sisters or La Pine, start with your city.

Schedule
How long a kitchen remodel takes
A typical full remodel, start to finish. A cabinet refresh skips most of this. Neil Kelly quotes 3 to 5 months for a refresh, 5 to 8 for a same-footprint kitchen and 8 to 12 for a redesign, design included.
- 1
Find a pro and design
2 to 8 weeks
Book early. Surface Kitchen & Bath suggests scheduling at least 4 to 6 weeks out, and spring and summer fill fastest.
- 2
Order cabinets and appliances
2 to 12+ weeks
Custom cabinets take the longest. Don't start demo until cabinets have a firm delivery date.
- 3
Permits
Days to several weeks
The City of Bend's own estimate. Finish-only work needs no building permit; wiring, plumbing, gas and walls do. Pre-2004 homes need an asbestos survey before demo.
- 4
Demolition
A few days
Donate usable cabinets and appliances to the Habitat ReStore before demo day.
- 5
Rough-in and inspections
1 to 3 weeks
Framing, plumbing, gas, electrical and ducting, then City inspections (booked online) before walls close.
- 6
Cabinets and flooring
1 to 3 weeks
Cabinets go in first so the countertop shop can template the real boxes.
- 7
Countertops
About 2 weeks
Solid Rock Stone lists templating at 1 to 2 hours, fabrication at 7 to 14 days and install at 4 to 6 hours.
- 8
Backsplash, lights, appliances, punch list
1 to 2 weeks
Final inspection closes the permit, then you can cook again.

Bend-specific things to ask
- Whose name is on the license? Many brands are licensed under another legal name (Kitchen Tune-Up Bend Redmond is Lentz Family Enterprises LLC; DCR Northwest is Dannunzio Construction & Renovation LLC). Match the CCB number on the contract.
- Older house? Before 1978, the contractor needs a CCB lead-based paint renovation license. Before 2004, an asbestos survey comes before a demo permit.
- Rental or second home? Bend lets owners do their own work, but not on a home that's rented or leased.
- HOA? Sunriver, Black Butte Ranch, Broken Top and many Bend neighborhoods set rules on dumpsters, parking and work hours.

Bend kitchen tips to bring up with your remodeler
High desert, high altitude, cold nights and smoke season all affect what works in a Bend kitchen.
You cook at 3,623 feet
Bend sits at about 3,623 feet, Sunriver near 4,165 and Redmond near 3,075. Water boils around 205°F here, so pasta and beans take longer, and baking needs tweaks. Gas ranges and cooktops may need the maker's high-altitude setup, so ask your installer to check the manual.
Dry air moves wood
High desert air is dry, especially with winter heat on. Solid wood doors, butcher block and wood floors shrink and swell. Let flooring acclimate, oil butcher block often, and lean toward engineered wood and stable door styles.
Hard freezes
Single-digit nights happen. Avoid running supply lines in an uninsulated exterior wall, insulate behind a sink under a window, and add a shutoff valve you can reach.
Smoke season and the range hood
Pick a hood that vents outdoors rather than recirculating, sized for your range. Under the residential code, hoods over 400 cfm generally need makeup air, which affects cost, so ask early. A tight, well-ducted kitchen also helps on smoky summer days.
Strong mountain sun
UV is stronger at elevation. West-facing windows over a sink can fade wood finishes and heat the room by late afternoon. Low-e glass, shades or an overhang help, and natural white oak handles light better than dark stains.
Gear and dirt come in through the kitchen
Many Bend kitchens open to the garage or back door. Plan a drop zone with hooks and a bench, durable floors that handle grit and snowmelt, and a spot for the dog bowl.
Know your water provider
Bend homes may be on City of Bend water, Avion Water, another district or a private well. Check your provider's water quality report before buying a softener or filter, and before choosing finishes that show spots.
HOAs and second homes
Sunriver, Black Butte Ranch, Broken Top and many Bend neighborhoods have HOA rules for exterior changes, dumpsters and work hours. For rentals and second homes, choose durable, easy-clean finishes and a layout that works for guests.
Gas or induction
Induction is fast, easy to clean and does not add combustion to indoor air. Oregon's HEAR program lists up to $840 for an electric stove, cooktop, range or oven for income-qualified households, but its site said no rebates were available yet when we checked. Check before you buy.
Materials
Picking countertops, cabinets and floors
Quartz $$
Good for: Busy families, rentals, white looks
Care: Wipe and go. No sealing.
Watch out: Can scorch from hot pans; not for outdoor kitchens in full sun
See it at Nelson Tile & Stone, Precision Countertops, Imagine Stoneworks
Granite and quartzite $$ to $$$
Good for: Heat resistance and one-of-a-kind slabs
Care: Seal on a schedule
Watch out: Pick slabs in person; quartzite and marble look-alikes vary a lot in hardness
See it at Nelson Tile & Stone, Solid Rock Stone Countertops, Legacy Stoneworks
Porcelain and ultracompact $$$
Good for: Heat, UV and stain resistance; thin modern edges
Care: Very low
Watch out: Needs a fabricator experienced with it; chips at edges if abused
See it at Precision Countertops, Baptista Design Gallery
Butcher block $
Good for: Warm look on an island or a baking station
Care: Oil often, more so in dry Bend air
Watch out: Moves with humidity; keep water away from seams
Laminate and solid surface $
Good for: Budgets, rentals, laundry rooms
Care: Low
Watch out: Not heat-proof; seams show
See it at Precision Countertops
Cabinets
- White oakThe Bend favorite. Natural or rift-sawn oak reads warm and pairs with views and timber ceilings.
- Alder and walnutAlder is a classic Northwest cabinet wood with a rustic, knotty option. Walnut adds a darker, modern accent.
- PaintedMaple or MDF doors with a durable paint finish. MDF holds paint without seams cracking as wood moves.
- Textured laminateWood-look or matte slab doors that shrug off kids and rentals. Deschutes River Cabinet & Closet builds these too.
- Plywood vs particleboard boxesAsk what the boxes are made of. Plywood boxes hold screws and resist water better.
Floors
- Engineered woodReal wood face on a stable core, so it handles dry winters better than solid wood.
- Luxury vinyl plankWaterproof and tough with dogs and snowmelt. Choose a thicker wear layer.
- TileNearly indestructible. Add radiant heat if you hate cold floors on January mornings.
More in our hardwood flooring guide.
During the remodel
Living through it
Set up a camp kitchen
Move the coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven and a fridge to the garage or laundry room. An induction hot plate and an electric pressure cooker go a long way.
Donate before demo
The Bend Redmond Habitat ReStore takes major appliances, building materials and furniture in clean, complete, working condition. Large items can be picked up; schedule online or call 541-312-6709.
Haul the rest
Knott Landfill Recycling and Transfer Facility at 61050 SE 27th St handles what cannot be reused. Call the recycling center at 541-388-1910 about appliances and metal.
Eat out on purpose

Kitchen remodeling in Bend: FAQ
Who are the best kitchen remodelers in Bend?
Our picks are Neil Kelly for all-in-one design and build, Surface Kitchen & Bath for a kitchen and bath specialist with a showroom, Sierra James Construction for big layout changes, Bend Craftsmen Company for a small owner-run builder, Kitchen Tune-Up for a budget cabinet refresh and Emily Cathcart Designs for independent design. Choice NW Construction stands out in Sisters and Black Butte, and Appel Design & Construction in Sunriver. Call two or three and compare written estimates.
How do I pick a kitchen remodeler?
Decide how big the project is first: a cabinet refresh, new cabinets in the same layout, or a full redesign. Then call two or three companies that do that kind of work, check their Oregon CCB license, look at kitchens they have finished, and compare written estimates that list the same things.
How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Bend, Oregon?
Local companies that post prices put most full kitchen remodels between about $45,000 and $150,000: Almog Construction lists $45,000 to $110,000+ and Rockin’ K GC lists $50,000 to $150,000 for a new kitchen in the same layout, with layout-changing remodels often $150,000+. Neil Kelly’s tiers run $55,000 to $330,000+. In the 2025 Cost vs Value report, the closest Oregon market (Medford) averaged $25,827 for a midrange minor remodel, $75,822 for a midrange major remodel and $150,741 for an upscale remodel.
Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen in Bend?
Not for cabinets, countertops, tile, paint and similar finish work; Oregon’s residential code exempts them from a building permit. You do need permits for new wiring, moved plumbing, gas lines, ducted range hoods and any wall or structural change. Inside Bend city limits, apply through the City of Bend’s Online Permit Center; outside the city, Deschutes County handles most permits.
How long does a kitchen permit take in Bend?
The City of Bend says permit review takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the project. Trade-only permits for wiring or plumbing are usually quick; a remodel that moves walls needs plan review. Permits expire if no inspection is requested within 180 days.
Can I remodel my own kitchen in Bend without a contractor?
Yes, homeowners can do work on their own home and pull their own permits in Bend. You cannot do it yourself on a home that is rented or leased; that work must be done by a licensed contractor. Anyone you pay to do construction work must hold an Oregon CCB license.
Does a kitchen remodel add value to a Bend home?
In the 2025 Cost vs Value report, a midrange minor kitchen remodel recouped about 115% of its cost at resale in Medford, Oregon, and 129% across the Pacific region. Major remodels recouped 36% to 57%. Bigger remodels are mostly for how you live, not resale.
How long does a kitchen remodel take?
A cabinet refresh can take days to a couple of weeks. A full remodel commonly runs 6 to 12 weeks of construction after design, with cabinet lead times and permits adding to that. Neil Kelly quotes 3 to 5 months start to finish for a refresh, 5 to 8 months for a same-footprint kitchen and 8 to 12 months for a full redesign.
Should I hire a designer or a design-build firm?
Design-build firms like Neil Kelly, Surface Kitchen & Bath and Sierra James handle design and construction under one contract. An independent designer like Emily Cathcart lets you bid the same plan to several builders. Design-build is simpler; separate design gives you more price comparison.
What if my Bend house was built before 1978 or 2004?
For homes built before 1978, Oregon requires contractors who disturb painted surfaces to hold a CCB lead-based paint renovation license; our compare table marks which remodelers have one. For homes with four or fewer units built before Jan. 1, 2004, an asbestos survey is required before a remodel permit that includes demolition.
What countertop is best for a Bend kitchen?
Quartz is the low-maintenance favorite. Granite and quartzite handle heat well and need sealing. Porcelain and ultracompact slabs resist heat and UV. Butcher block looks great but needs frequent oiling in our dry climate.
Is induction worth it at altitude?
Induction works the same at 3,600 feet as at sea level and boils water fast, while gas appliances may need high-altitude adjustment. Check Oregon’s HEAR program for rebate status if your household is income-qualified.
How do I check a contractor’s license?
Search the business on the Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license lookup. It shows license status, bond, insurance and complaint history. Note that the license can be under a different legal name than the brand, for example Kitchen Tune-Up Bend Redmond is licensed as Lentz Family Enterprises LLC.
What should I do with my old cabinets and appliances?
If they are clean, complete and working, donate them to the Bend Redmond Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 224 NE Thurston Ave, or schedule a pick-up. Anything else can go to Knott Landfill’s recycling and transfer facility.
