Sparks, smoke, a burning smell or a hot, buzzing panel is an emergency: switch off the breaker or main if you can do it safely, and call 911 if anything is burning. Then call one of the 24-hour shops below.

Panel & service upgrades in Bend

A panel upgrade swaps the breaker box. A service upgrade also raises the amperage coming from the utility, which usually means a new meter base, new service wires or conduit, new grounding and a visit from Pacific Power or Central Electric Cooperative.

Signs it’s time

  • Fuses, or a panel brand your inspector or insurer flags
  • Breakers that trip when the dryer and microwave run together
  • No open slots, or double-tapped breakers
  • A warm cover, buzzing or scorch marks (call today)
  • Adding an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub or shop

Cheaper alternatives to ask about

  • Load calculation: it may show your 100- or 150-amp service can carry the new load
  • EV load management: chargers that throttle when the house is busy
  • Smart panel: Manzanita installs SPAN panels that shed loads automatically
  • Subpanel: from $1,700 at Manzanita when the main has capacity but no space

Posted price: Manzanita Electric lists 200-amp panel upgrades from $4,500 (checked October 23, 2026). Gold Electric offers free panel inspections and says most panels last 25 to 40 years.

EV chargers, hot tubs, heat pumps and other new loads

These are the jobs that send most Bend homeowners to an electrician. Each needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit and an electrical permit.

A black ChargePoint home EV charger with its cable coiled, mounted on house siding

EV chargers

Most Level 2 chargers run on a 40- to 60-amp circuit, hardwired or through a NEMA 14-50 outlet. The panel location, the distance to the parking spot and whether the run is inside or outdoors set the price. Manzanita posts installs from $1,200 (charger extra). The City of Bend requires an electrical permit for chargers at single-family homes.

The fan grille of an air-source heat pump outdoor unit running with snow on the ground around it

Heat pumps and mini-splits

The outdoor unit needs its own breaker and a disconnect; ducted systems with electric backup strips can need a second large circuit. Ask the HVAC company whether its own electricians do the wiring. Central Oregon Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical, Roth Home, WOW Electric and Gold Electric do both trades.

A heat pump outdoor unit running in snow. Photo: PeterEastern, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

Hot tubs

Usually a 240-volt, 40- to 60-amp circuit with a GFCI disconnect within sight of the tub and at least 5 feet away. Trenching from the house is often the biggest cost. Manzanita posts hot tub wiring from $2,500.

Shops, garages and ADUs

A detached shop or ADU may need a subpanel and a trenched feeder; an ADU may need its own service. Gold Electric lists shop, garage and barn wiring.

Solar and batteries

Solar and battery tie-ins need an electrical permit. If you reroof, an electrical contractor has to permit the panel reinstall too, per Bend’s re-roof worksheet.

What’s different about electrical work in Bend

New loads, cold winters, wildfire-season shutoffs and two different utilities shape a Bend electrical job.

Older panels meet new loads

Plenty of Bend homes built before the 2000s boom still have 100-amp or 125-amp service. Adding an EV charger, a heat pump with backup heat strips and a hot tub can push past that. A load calculation (NEC 220.83 for existing homes) tells you whether you need a bigger service, a smart panel or a simple load-management device. A service upgrade also means a new meter base and a utility visit.

Gold Electric FAQ · Manzanita pricing

EV chargers and Bend winters

A Level 2 charger on a 40- to 60-amp circuit adds roughly 25 to 40 miles of range an hour; Level 1 at a regular outlet adds about 3 to 5. Cold Bend nights cut range and slow charging, which pushes many owners to Level 2. Chargers mounted outdoors need a rating for snow and spray, and the cable route should stay clear of plowed snow.

City of Bend EV permit guideline · Pacific Power EV rebates

Heat pumps and backup heat

Heat pumps are taking over from gas furnaces and baseboard heat in Central Oregon. Cold-climate models keep working through Bend winters, but many ducted systems include 10 to 15 kW electric backup strips, which can need their own 60-amp or larger breakers. Settle the breaker sizes and panel space before the HVAC install date. Energy Trust incentives are paid through participating contractors.

Energy Trust of Oregon · Our heat pump guide

Wildfire season and PSPS outages

Pacific Power can cut power ahead of high wind, low humidity and dry fuels in a Public Safety Power Shutoff, usually with about 48 hours’ notice, and keep it off until the risk passes. Winter storms knock out power too. A generator inlet with an interlock or transfer switch lets you run a portable generator safely; a standby generator starts on its own. Never back-feed through a dryer outlet.

Pacific Power PSPS · Search your address on the PSPS map

Pacific Power or Central Electric?

Most of Bend is served by Pacific Power; Central Electric Cooperative (CEC) serves many rural and edge-of-town properties around Bend, Redmond, Sisters and La Pine. Your utility decides the meter and disconnect rules for a service upgrade, which rebates you can get and how outage alerts reach you, so tell the electrician who sends your bill.

Pacific Power · Central Electric Cooperative

Oregon licensing and permits

Two licenses to check

Oregon electricians need a CCB license for the business and an electrical contractor license from the Building Codes Division, with a licensed supervising electrician signing for the work. A CCB number alone isn’t enough.

CCB search · BCD license data

Inside Bend city limits

The City of Bend Building Safety Division issues electrical permits and does the inspections (541-388-5580, 710 NW Wall St). Its guideline requires an electrical permit for EV chargers at single-family homes. Contractors can use a state minor label for small jobs.

Bend EV permit guideline

Outside city limits

Deschutes County Community Development handles permits in unincorporated areas such as Tumalo, Deschutes River Woods and much of the land between Bend, Redmond and Sisters. Other cities have their own building departments, so ask the electrician who issues the permit.

Deschutes County CDD

Doing it yourself

Oregon lets owners wire their own home or farm if it is not intended for sale, exchange, lease or rent, with a permit and inspections. Rentals need a licensed electrical contractor. Swapping a fixture, switch or outlet like-for-like needs no permit for homeowners.

What moves the price

  • Distance from the panel. Every foot of wire, conduit and trenching between the panel and the charger, tub or shop adds labor and copper.
  • Panel capacity. A load calculation that comes back short means a subpanel, load management or a full service upgrade on top of the job you called about.
  • Finished walls. Fishing wire through finished drywall, vaulted ceilings or a slab takes longer than open framing or an unfinished garage.
  • Permit and inspection. Bend requires electrical permits for new circuits, chargers, hot tubs and panels. Contractors fold permit fees into the quote; ask that they be listed.
  • Utility coordination. Service upgrades need Pacific Power or CEC to disconnect and reconnect, which sets the schedule.
  • Hourly vs flat rate. Repairs are usually billed by the hour after a trip or first-hour charge; installs are usually flat-rate. Ask which before the visit.

Rebates and credits in 2026

Pacific Power income-qualified EV charger rebate

For Pacific Power residential customers in Oregon at or below the program’s income limit: up to $1,500 for a hardwired Level 2 charger or up to $500 for a 240-volt outlet, for equipment bought on or after January 1, 2026 and installed by a licensed electrician. Apply within a year of purchase. Its 2026 page lists only the income-qualified rebate.

Pacific Power

Energy Trust heat pump incentives

Pacific Power customers can get heat pump incentives through Energy Trust trade-ally contractors, who take the incentive off the invoice. Amounts depend on your home type and current heat source, so ask the HVAC contractor what applies before you sign. The extra-large regional promotion (up to $4,000) is limited to four eastern Oregon counties, not Central Oregon.

Energy Trust

Federal EV charger credit (30C): ended

The 30% federal credit for home charging equipment covered property placed in service through June 30, 2026.

Federal panel upgrade credit (25C): ended

The energy-efficient home improvement credit, which included up to $600 for a panel upgrade, covered work placed in service through December 31, 2025.

How to compare electrical quotes

Get two or three written quotes for anything bigger than a service call, and check them line by line.

Before you hire

  • Ask for both the CCB number and the Oregon electrical contractor license number, and look them up
  • Ask who signs as supervising electrician and who will actually be on site
  • Confirm they pull the permit and book the inspections
  • Ask whether repairs are billed by the hour, a trip charge or flat rate
  • For a new load, ask for a written load calculation
  • Ask about after-hours rates if you might need them

On the written quote

  • Breaker size, wire size and route, and conduit or trenching
  • Permit and inspection fees listed
  • Utility coordination for service upgrades
  • Grounding and bonding, surge protection, labeling
  • Drywall cuts: who patches and paints
  • Workmanship warranty in writing (Gold: 1 year; Elite: lifetime on labor)

What to send when asking for an estimate

  • Panel photos with the door open, plus the label inside the door
  • Main breaker size (the number on the big breaker at the top)
  • Where the new thing goes and roughly how far it is from the panel
  • Model and spec sheet for the charger, tub, heat pump or generator
  • Finished or open walls, crawl space or attic access
  • Your utility: Pacific Power or Central Electric Cooperative

Electricians in Bend: common questions

How much does an electrician cost in Bend, Oregon?

Of the companies we checked, two post prices. Manzanita Electric charges a $129 service call or trip charge and lists starting prices such as $225 for a light fixture, $800 for a dedicated circuit, $1,200 for an EV charger install and $4,500 for a 200-amp panel. Gold Electric says most service calls run $125 to $200 for the first hour and $95 to $150 an hour after that, with flat-rate quotes for bigger jobs (both checked October 23, 2026).

How much is a panel upgrade in Bend?

Manzanita Electric posts 200-amp panel upgrades from $4,500 and subpanels from $1,700. The final price depends on whether the meter base and service wires change, the panel location, grounding and bonding fixes, permits and utility coordination. Get a load calculation first: you may not need a full upgrade.

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Bend?

Yes, for most work beyond like-for-like swaps. New circuits, EV chargers, hot tubs, panel and service changes and remodel wiring need an electrical permit from the City of Bend Building Safety Division inside city limits, or Deschutes County outside them. Licensed contractors pull the permit and schedule inspections; small jobs may use a state minor label instead.

Can I do my own electrical work in Oregon?

Oregon lets an owner do electrical work on their own home if it is not intended for sale, rent, lease or exchange, with a permit and inspections (ORS 479.540). Rentals and homes you plan to sell need a licensed electrical contractor. Replacing a fixture, switch or outlet like-for-like is the homeowner-only exception that needs no permit in Bend.

What licenses should a Bend electrician have?

Two: an Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) license for the business, and an Oregon electrical contractor license from the Building Codes Division, with a licensed supervising electrician signing for the work. Every company we list in full has both; we checked the numbers against state data on October 23, 2026.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Bend?

Manzanita Electric posts EV charger installs from $1,200, not counting the charger. Long runs from the panel, trenching, outdoor mounting or a panel that needs more capacity raise the price. Bend requires an electrical permit for chargers at single-family homes.

Are there rebates for EV chargers or panel upgrades in 2026?

The federal 30C charger credit ended for equipment placed in service after June 30, 2026, and the 25C credit that covered panel upgrades ended after 2025. Which Bend electricians offer 24/7 emergency service?

Manzanita Electric, Gold Electric, Central Oregon Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical and Roth Home advertise 24-hour or 24/7 emergency service, and Amped Electric lists emergency hours. For smoke, sparks or a burning smell, shut off the breaker and call 911 if there is fire.

Do I need a generator for PSPS outages in Bend?

Not necessarily, but planned Public Safety Power Shutoffs and winter storms can leave you without power for hours or days. If you buy a portable generator, have an electrician install an inlet with an interlock or transfer switch so it cannot back-feed the grid. Standby generators need a permit and a pad, and Gold Electric is a Generac dealer.

What should I send an electrician for a faster estimate?

Photos of the panel with the door open and the label inside, the main breaker size, where the new equipment will go and how far it is from the panel, the charger or appliance model, and whether walls are finished. Manzanita and Gold both ask for photos or details up front.
